BREAKING: CNN's fact-checker exposes an AVALANCHE OF LIES from Trump about Canada — and there's a new one almost every day.

Donald Trump doesn't just have policy disagreements with Canada. According to CNN's chief fact-checker Daniel Dale, who happens to be Canadian himself, Trump has built his entire trade war narrative on a foundation of demonstrably false claims — and the lies keep coming.

Just today, Dale documented, Trump falsely claimed Canada's unemployment rate is "10% and rapidly rising." The actual number: 6.4%, and it's been DECLINING for three straight months. Trump also falsely claimed Canada does "95% of its business with the US." The real figure is 72%.

He blamed the entire US-Canada trade deficit on high Canadian agricultural tariffs, despite the fact that roughly 97% of US agricultural exports to Canada are already tariff-free, and the actual deficit stems overwhelmingly from cheap Canadian crude oil imports that benefit American consumers.

And that's just today's batch. Dale's running tally over the past 18 months reads like a highlight reel of fabrication.

Trump has falsely claimed Canada doesn't buy American agricultural products, when it's actually the world's SECOND-LARGEST buyer of them. He's falsely claimed Canadians support becoming America's 51st state, when polling shows overwhelming opposition.

He's falsely claimed Canada is among the world's highest-tariff nations, when World Trade Organization rankings place it near the bottom. He's falsely claimed Canada "essentially doesn't have a military," ignoring that Canadian forces have fought alongside American troops in multiple wars and rank in the upper half of NATO by force size.

He's also falsely inflated the US trade deficit with Canada to "$200 billion" (nowhere close), falsely claimed Canada bans American banks (more than a dozen currently operate there), falsely claimed Canada is "constantly surrounded" by Chinese and Russian ships (fiction), and falsely accused former PM Trudeau of using trade tensions to run for reelection — despite Trudeau, quite obviously, not running.

This isn't policy disagreement. This is a dispute over the nature of reality!

This is a sitting president manufacturing an entire economic conflict with one of America's closest allies using numbers he simply invented, over and over, across nearly two years, with virtually no correction or accountability.

When the facts don't support your trade war, apparently the solution is just to make up new facts. Someone needs to tell Trump that the world doesn’t work like that, and it may as well be CNN’s Daniel Dale.

A little history is useful here.

There was a time when the Canada–U.S. relationship was considered so important — so fundamental — that even words spoken privately carried consequences.

When I worked for Stephen Harper while he was Leader of the Official Opposition, an aide in Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s office privately referred to President George W. Bush as a “moron.”

We were in opposition, and we considered it unacceptable. So did Prime Minister Chrétien. The aide ultimately resigned.

Think about how far we have travelled since then.

Today, an American president can be called a bully or a loser. Canadians can tell him, quite literally, to “kiss our ass.” What once could have been a firing offence has become an expression of something much deeper: just how badly Donald Trump has damaged what generations of Canadians and Americans worked to build.

This was never an ordinary bilateral relationship. We disagreed — sometimes profoundly — but underneath those disagreements was a reservoir of trust, respect and friendship. It was treated almost as sacred because both countries understood its value.

Donald Trump has squandered much of that goodwill.

And perhaps his greatest miscalculation is confusing Canadian kindness with Canadian weakness.

We are polite. We are patient. We prefer friendship to confrontation. But none of those qualities should ever be mistaken for weakness.

Canada did not suddenly become hostile toward the United States. Canadians are reacting to a relationship that has been repeatedly tested, insulted and taken for granted.

History will remember many things about this period.

Canadian weakness will not be one of them.

And so, Mr. President — speaking on behalf of myself, and only myself:

This might not make me popular but I remain continuously impressed by Carney: to me, one of the few (if not the only) genuine statesman in the West.

It genuinely takes incredible balls and statesmanship - especially for Canada, arguably the western country that's most dependent on the US - to walk away from the table and match Trump's tariffs China-style.

Europe, with far less dependence on the US and considerably more resources than Canada, just pathetically caved and signed on Trump's humiliating terms when in the same situation.

Today, the Ukrainian army is effectively the main army in Europe that can deter and resist large-scale aggression over a long period of time. And after this war, this must remain the case.

The existence of such an army should help prevent any future aggressive moves by Putin. That is why we need to start thinking now about how to provide the funding the Ukrainian army will need in the years ahead.

If we want Europe to have the strongest army, one that can truly respond to any threat, this is only possible with long-term cooperation with Ukraine and long-term support for the Ukrainian army. This is a realistic new security architecture for Europe.
