They don't respond to what you say, but how you say it. Yelling in frustration at a kid to SWITCH IT! COME ON! Or asking calmly switch it, in a supporting tone of "come on, you got this" will have different results and future impacts. More informed coaching needed at all levels.
I have witnessed this over and over again and something needs to be said or done to those that are guilty. Youth club soccer coaches should not berate kids, they should not single them out in front of the team, they should not put them in challenging positions only to harp on them when they struggle or fail.
Kids are supposed to learn from mistakes. That’s what life is all about. They need you to put your arm around them and explain to them how to do things better and to improve. If you berate them and beat them down they will just learn to hate and maybe quit the game they love to play, or they will play tight and scared leading to more mistakes or stunted player growth, as they will be too scared to try anything new and develop.
Kids should be challenged, if you push them by moving up a level or age group, then celebrate their small victories or the good things they do, they will strive to make more of those moments happen. Then those scores you crave will start to improve faster. Teach them how to battle and fight to the end no matter what. Negativity in those moments only negates any good that can come out of those challenging situations.
A reminder that in European countries they don’t keep score at the youth age levels. They don’t care about the score of the game, they care about kids playing and getting better in individual moments. This may seem anti-American to sports fans in this country but remember that France, Germany, the Netherlands, etc. have all won major tournament trophies and are better than us at soccer despite having a fraction of our population. The score matters in learning how to compete but it doesn’t determine development. Stay focused on what matters. The kids matter first and foremost, their development and love for the game 2nd, and the score far below both of those.
No one will remember if you won the Phillip Broome Classic Tournament in the 2nd division in 10 years but they will remember that you taught them how to play and get better.
We believe any player can learn to compete at a high level if they put in the work.
Not any player who is athletic on day one. Not any player as long as they have talent. Not any player who learns quickly. Any player who puts in the work.
Coaching should be transformational.
Can we please 🛑 STOP judging ⚽️ players at such a young age?
Many coaches around the globe 🌏 have notice how players between the ages of 14-20 can grow by leaps & bounds in all 4 areas of the game
What I wonder is how many 5-13 year olds were made to feel that they should just quit
How many “could have been” top pros have we discouraged?
When I watch youth trainings & matches in the 🇺🇸 (and I watch hundreds), I seriously wonder at times how many players could have been top level pros, that were turned off from ⚽️ because of rejection instead of helping them fix whatever is wrong or because they were late bloomers.
In the past 4 years, almost 70% of our HS girls soccer players have received college offers after being seen and evaluated from our HS games. Our recruiting network in constantly growing as we develop our girls!
There is a false narrative that a #collegesoccer coach will NOT go to a High School match to assess players.
Perhaps there is a sampling of coaches who refuse to attend a HS ⚽️ game, but I categorically assure you that it’s not true across this nation 🇺🇸
Granted, this varies widely from community to community but there are more college coaches scouting HS too in this country than those that are not
This DOES NOT mean they are just showing up to see who might be good, but that’s not how successful coaches recruit anyhow.
They get a recommendation from a trusted source, then they figure out the most efficient way to assess that player.
It might be HS, or club, or a tournament or a camp & sometimes it has to be film 🎥 only & they are willing to take a gamble because of a strong relationship with the people who recommended the player.
But I 💯 assure you that #collegesoccer coaches will use HS matches as an assessment vehicle if it makes sense to the

Preseason training starts tomorrow for a lot of you student athletes out there.
There are going to be moments you question yourself so I want to leave you with this…
-Preseason is TOUGH
-Being a collegiate student athlete in general is TOUGH
However,
That DREAM was planted in you for a reason.
CHASE IT💯
Work for your teammates. Take care of your teammates. The success we have as a team in season comes from the months of prep work leading up to it! We want student athletes who want to put in that work!
If you don’t think your coaches are paying attention and wondering if you’re working out this summer, you’re wrong.
High school, club and especially college soccer, your coaches are paying attention. It helps when you post your workouts and tag them.

You can never get too good at the fundamentals. The only difference between top players at top levels and youth players at developmental levels is the amount of time you have to execute a skill, and the consistency with which you execute it at.
An actual College ⚽️ Player conversation:
Player: “What do I need to do to get more playing time?”
Coach:
“What have you done since the last talk we had about this?
I see your 1st touch hasn’t improved
Have you been juggling left, right, left, right to the 18 and back?
Are you doing the wall work we showed you?”
Player: “No”
Coach: “There’s your answer”
🚨 Players: don't keep coming back to coach over and over asking the same questions
Take what your coaches give you to do & go do those things!
Then you come back for the next steps to improve & make movement to getting more PT
Coaches cannot want this more than you do
