Last week, closing the year with the Ambassador of Italy to the UK , @ItalyinUK, @aisuk_info & @ilCircoloBazaar for the award ceremony for early-career Italian researchers in the UK. A big honour and a great experience presenting my paper for the first time outside of academia
🌾New Working paper Alert! Can state regulation curb India’s crop-burning crisis—at scale?
India’s crop burning crisis is widely portrayed as an "intractable" problem: the private cost of burning is low, damages are largely borne downwind, and enforcement is often uneven.
By documenting that a consistently enforced regulatory bundle can deliver large and persistent reductions in residue burning and pollution, this paper adds a further piece to the policy puzzle of how to confront what has long been treated as an unsolvable environmental problem.
"You’ve worked too hard for that PhD to settle — find a job you love. Do yourself the favor of exploring all your options." Yes, please reward your future self!
The academic job market is bad and will likely get worse. Research job openings have dropped sharply, just as economists laid off from government roles are flooding the market. Current PhD students should have candid conversations with their advisors about their prospects. If prospects aren’t strong, pivot immediately toward networking and interview prep. A major advantage of the PhD is that you can start working even before graduation—use this strategically, because the formal, structured market is in tatters.
Huge thanks to the organisers and @KingsCollegeLon for putting together such a great event – full of inspiring talks, engaging discussions, and truly great people.

I presented my paper on the illegal deforestation of the Amazon – "Narco-Deforestation: The Environmental Effects of Coca Cultivation".
It’s incredibly rewarding to work on something so deeply policy-relevant – and even more so to see people genuinely care and want to learn more
