Elon Musk explains the success of Tesla Shanghai
Tesla opened its Shanghai Gigafactory in 2019. Now it stands as Tesla’s largest production site worldwide, churning out nearly half of Tesla’s global vehicle output and serving as its biggest export hub.
In an exclusive interview with CMG, Musk summed up the factory’s success in one phrase... #ChinaUSConnects #economy
China’s exports to the US are rebounding sharply:
Chinese exports to the US surged +34% YoY in August to $42.5 billion, surpassing $40.0 billion for the 3rd consecutive month.
This marks the 5th consecutive month of growth and the 2nd-largest YoY increase in at least 5 years.
Growth has also doubled from July’s +17% YoY increase.
By comparison, in August 2025, China’s exports to the US dropped -33% YoY, to $31.6 billion.
The recent surge was driven by stronger demand for AI-related electronics produced in China, which is supporting stronger shipments despite ongoing trade tensions.
Chinese exports are making a powerful comeback despite tariffs.
BREAKING: Elon Musk says trade makes both the U.S. and China more prosperous in his new interview with People’s Daily.
"History has shown that trade leads to mutual prosperity. I hope we can have as close to free trade with China as possible with the U.S. This is just a basic foundational element in economics. If you stop trade between two large countries, both countries are worse off.
The reason one has trade is because one country is making something that's better than what another country makes in some areas, and vice versa. You exchange goods and services that are the strength of one country and the strength of a different country. People were trading in caveman times. That makes things better.”
Elon Musk on Chinese manufacturing.
"China just has a very strong inherent ability to do manufacturing well."
In a new CCTV Finance / CGTN sit-down, Elon says — to be totally frank — the magic of Tesla Shanghai is because of Chinese.
"What we have is the Tesla China team is just incredibly talented and hardworking and trustworthy."
"The quality is excellent and the efficiency is excellent, so the Tesla Shanghai factory is a gem."
"It's beautiful, actually, if anyone's ever been there."
Elon Musk on President Xi in an interview with CCTV Finance.
"He seems like a great leader.
Under his tenure, China has prospered immensely.
I’ve seen it firsthand.
If you visit China and you see the amount of progress that happens from one year to the next, or even within a year, it’s very visible.
You can see the new buildings, the new infrastructure.
And it’s also obvious, just walking around the streets, that the prosperity of the average Chinese citizen has increased tremendously.
All that happened under President Xi while he’s been the leader of China.
So he’s clearly done an excellent job and is very capable."
BREAKING: Elon Musk says Chinese AI models are outstanding despite limited compute and expects China to address its chipmaking constraints in two or three years in his new interview with CCTV.
“The Chinese AI models are generally outstanding actually. I mean you can see on the sort of intelligence rankings there, especially given the limited amount of compute that the Chinese AI companies have, the performance is excellent. Probably China's doing by far the best in terms of performance per unit of compute.
And as I've said publicly, you know, I think China's going address the compute limitation in, I think, faster than most people expect. My rough guess would be that China addresses the compute constraints with lithography and chip making in about two or three years.”
BREAKING: Elon Musk on China in his new interview with CCTV Finance:
“I generally recommend people go to China as much as they can, because China has so many things to see. I took the bullet train from Beijing to Xi’an. That was a great experience. The train stations are amazing.
“The Terracotta Warriors are one of the wonders of the world. Just make sure you look out the window and aren’t on your phone, because there’s so much to see. Any words I say do not do justice to the incredible majesty that is China. It’s awesome.”
BREAKING: Elon Musk on Chinese President Xi Jinping in his new interview with CCTV Finance:
“He seems like a great leader. Under his tenure, China has prospered immensely. I've seen it firsthand. If you visit China and you see the amount of progress that happens from one year to the next, or even within a year, it's very visible. Like, you can see the new buildings, the new infrastructure.
And it's also obvious to see that just walking around the streets, the increased prosperity of the average Chinese citizen has increased tremendously. All that seems happened under President Xi's, you know, while he's been the leader of China. So he's clearly done an excellent job and is very capable.”
🇺🇸🇨🇳 Sec. Bessent:
"We just had a very, very successful engagement with the Chinese on trade, AI, completing where we left off in Beijing.
There, we created the board of trade and began the subject of AI, and this evening those were operationalized."
We'll see if that's true. I don't think politicians realize yet just how big of a deal AI is...

When Xi Jinping meets Trump, he meets Trump as the leader of the rising superpower that is surpassing the US on increasingly more metrics.
Trump meets Xi as the leader of a divided nation embroiled in a multitude of crises, with its best days firmly behind it.
A Chinese humanoid robot took on a human in what organizers billed as the first-ever human-vs-robot cage fight in the US.
The 1.83-meter T800, made by Shenzhen-based EngineAI, landed a powerful kick that sent its American opponent crashing to the floor.
Lee Kuan Yew’s blunt take on democracy still hits hard.
Singapore’s founding father explained why pure Western-style majority rule isn’t a universal model.
He argues that order, competence, and long-term results often matter more than simply counting votes.
His core message is clear: democracy only works when a society is ready for it.
Without discipline and capable leadership, it can quickly slide into chaos.
Do you agree?

🇺🇸🇮🇪 A protest is underway in Dublin over Trump's second visit to Ireland as president.
I'd like to say what they did with effigies of Trump, Epstein, and Netanyahu, but the thought alone is bad enough. 🤣

Most contrarian trade now: buy China, fund it by selling America. Every market near its high — China near its low.
Anthony Bolton explains:
"The most contrarian thing you can do now? China. Definitely."
"How would you fund it? America. Everyone loves America, valuations are high, all the money's gone in."
"Often divide the journey from the arrival — normally when you get to the arrival, that's the end of a trend."
"Trump's inauguration is the end of the journey up. With China, everyone's been scared of tariffs for months — the date they come could be the turning point."
"The idea that AI only rubs off on a handful of US stocks makes no sense to me. It's so similar to the dot-com."
"American tech into Chinese tech."
"Three-year bear market, authorities want stocks higher, bond yields at record lows. There's really one other place money can go — equities."
"My view today: we're in the early stage of a new bull market in China."
BREAKING: The gap between the US 10Y Treasury Yield and China's 10Y Government Bond yield rises to a record 324 basis points.
In other words, the US government's cost of borrowing relative to China's has never been higher.
Absolutely incredible.
