A Missionary Letter from Paul Washer (1991)

In 1991, HeartCry Founder Paul Washer created a short documentary film reporting on a missionary journey he took to the northern mountains of Peru.

On this trip, he carried and distributed biblical resources purchased by HeartCry to people living in the mountains.

He recounts:
“As we carried the Bibles through the village, a multitude of believers followed us, and then we watched in amazement as they waited in line for hours with the hopes of purchasing their first Bible. We distributed 50 small personal libraries to key pastors in the region; a study Bible, a Bible manual, and a concordance doesn't sound like much to Christians who have more Bibles than days of the week, but to those in the mountains, it was pure gold.”

NT Wright on TULIP (2026) as Calvin bringing a “philosophical scheme to the text” that pushes everything “upstairs” into God’s unilateral decision. “If we push it all upstairs and say it is all God’s decision, and he simply determines how it is going to be, then you do end up with a God who, as many people have said, is impossible to worship because he seems like a capricious tyrant.”

Calvin, Sermons on Job: “When these doctors of the Sorbonne say that God has an absolute, or tyrannical, power, it is a diabolical blasphemy which was forged in hell, for such a thought must not enter into a faithful man’s head. So, he must say that God has an infinite power, which remains the rule for all righteousness. For if we want to make God powerful but no longer righteous, we tear him to shreds.”

Muller on Calvin (2000): “God is not a tyrant whose power can run contrary to his righteousness. There is, surely, a divine ‘righteousness more perfect than that of the Law’ — but there is no divine power beyond or outside of the divine righteousness.”
