30 years ago today I woke up on the bottom bunk in a German prison cell withdrawing from a drug I'd been addicted to for almost 9 years.
It felt like the worst day of my life when in fact it turned out to be one of the greatest days of my life.
The national lottery also started that day and looking back it feels like I won it.
The irony ain't lost on me that while writing this post I'm lying on the bunk of a luxury tour bus touring the UK with a successful recording artist as his merchandise partner.
I'm one of the lucky ones, I'm very conscious of that, I often think of those that never made it, I must have been to nearly a hundred funerals of kids I grew up with who never made it out the other side.
The photos above tell a story 30 years apart, the 1st one was on November 18th 1994 the last time I took heroin, the 2nd pic is me with my grandkids this summer.
The girl who later become my wife saved me, I'd been out of prison 6 weeks when we met and had stayed clean.
From that first meeting I can honestly say that in 30 years I've never been tempted once to take that shit.
I’d been in the gutter, homeless and on many occasions didn’t know where my next meal was coming from...all I was interested in was smack. It wasn’t easy sorting my head out but I did it, If you're experiencing similar issues go and speak to someone IF I CAN DO IT ANYONE CAN.
