Perhaps the most dangerous illusion in dealing with Moscow is the belief that territorial concessions could ever bring peace. Some still imagine that, in exchange for land, the Kremlin might accept security guarantees for Ukraine, tolerate the presence of peacekeepers, or even acquiesce to the continued arming of Kyiv. This is fantasy. It will not happen.

In reality, every concession granted to Moscow becomes a stepping stone to the next demand. If negotiations were to start, the Kremlin would not see them as a path to compromise, but as an open invitation to press harder. First it would insist on “demilitarization,” then on “denazification,” then on staged elections, recognition of the Russian language, and so forth — an endless chain of ultimatums designed not to settle the conflict but to dismantle Ukraine’s sovereignty piece by piece.

The West must understand this: concessions do not end Moscow’s aggression; they fuel it.
