Italy’s warm-up for Euro 88 included a seemingly routine defence of the unofficial world championship at home to Wales on 04/06/1988.
Italy had defeated the official world champions, Argentina and had remained unbeaten until Wales rode into town.
The Welsh, depleted of stars had players from various ladders of the English league pyramid on show but they did have Juventus striker Ian Rush in their side and don’t you just know it, he proved to be the difference.
His goal clinched an unlikely 1-0 win and a new champion was crowned.
Sadly, though, their reign as champions was more Buster Douglas than Mike Tyson in its longevity.
Italy vs Austria 1998: Baggio and Vieri Secure Top Spot. Italy and Austria met at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis for their final Group B fixture of the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Managed by Cesare Maldini, Italy needed a positive result to secure top spot in the group, while
Back at USA ‘94, there were 43 Serie A players at the WC - Italy’s 22-man squad + another 21 making up just over 8% of the total. This summer there will be 70 Serie A players at the WC, making up just over 5.6% of the 1,248 total. Italy’s absence has obviously played a part.
I know it's a trivial issue in the grand scheme of things, but not enough is made about how awful the World Cup logos have been since 2014. What used to be colourful and inventive has now become standardised and sterile. Much like football itself.
Doing some World Cup research and was reminded we were an Egypt goal away against England from this being the most perfectly symmetrical of groups in World Cup history.
Kids these days can find out about any player or see any score/result in seconds, it’s brilliant.
BUT back in the 90s when we saw far, far less overseas football, one of the best things about World Cups was discovering players you’d never heard of during the tournament - so many examples of that in 1990 (my fave WC) - remember doing the Roger Milla corner flag celebration in a Sunday morning game :)
While we're on the subject of WhatsApp groups, I've been a member of the Forza Calcio community for a while.
It's a strong community of calcio fans from all over the world and I can't recommend it enough. Let @luketaylortcd know if you're interested!
6) However, should the deal not be ratified by June 16 - the deadline for registration to the next Serie B season - Juve Stabia could be relegated to Serie C, with their spot likely awarded to the highest-placed of the four teams demoted to Serie C this term: Bari.
Bit of a thread about Juve Stabia's future - which remains clear as mud - coming up, so bear with us. 🧵
1) The club has been in judicial administration since October last year, due to an ongoing investigation by prosecutors in Naples about alleged links with the Camorra.
5) Prosecutors have adjourned the case until June 10 to finalise the shortlist of potential buyers expected to take over the club. The judicial administrators will in all likelihood choose which consortium Juve Stabia will be sold to next week.
Time for the Serie A awards! @EmmetGates and @dan_cancian pick their best - and worst - of the season.
