Even before the magic kicked in, he couldn't handle being honest with her when she asked him directly, so he chose complete control over actual vulnerability. The 'Nice Guy' act was a red flag long before the horror elements took over

Bear’s entire motivation was built on a delusion—he confused her basic workplace friendliness for attraction, and when he realized she was leaving for good, he used the Willow because he couldn't handle the reality that she didn't want him
