In 2019, a 23-year-old academy graduate at Athletico Madrid couldn't nail down a starting spot. Simeone's midfield was stacked with players like Koke, Thomas Party and Saul Niguez . The minutes weren't there so he does something not many young Spaniards do, he left LaLiga to go find himself.

Manchester City took a gamble when they got him for £62.5 million. Rodri more than anything wanted the starting spot and more playing time. He equally wanted the biggest stage there was, even if it meant leaving home.

What followed was one of the most complete midfield careers of a generation. Rodri didn't just get minutes he desired, he became the standard.

Now, he is coming back to Spain but this time with FC Barcelona 🔵🔴. Rodri has given the green light to Barca's project under Hansi Flick.

Think about the twist here. The player Atletico Madrid once couldn't find room for is being lined up to anchor the midfield of their fiercest rival. A homecoming with an edge nobody in Madrid saw coming when he left in 2019.
