Comparison can make one relish in being "better than others" or mope in being "less than others". Either way, what is behind the temptation to compare (that we all so easily fall into), is rather deadly and noxious. Self-bragging or self-pity are equally problematic and toxic.
Pain often lies hidden deep behind a smiling face. Smile back, and in this way honor what is presented at the surface. At the same time allow wisdom, empathy, and compassion to govern your interaction with what lies behind.
The alteration of our inner world cannot happen by information, rather only by divine wisdom. That wisdom, to those whose appetites are enslaved to baser instincts is considered folly. To those who have been trained by it however, it is the transforming power of God.
Lamentation and confession walk shoulder to shoulder, and unless the community learns to lament what God laments and confess as sin its participation in the failure of its leadership, it cannot move toward newness of life.
Rev., Dr. Michael Jinkins
Sometimes our dreams are the sorting out and sifting through of what we have accumulated thus far in our journey, showing up in metaphors and archetypal images that invite our reflection and consideration.
The human ego has the tendency to believe it is large and in charge. Sovereignty is what it deludes itself into thinking it possesses. Truth: "We ain't all that!"
The elimination of all pain and suffering is impossible. Our dreams bear witness to that often. Paying attention to the nightscapes we participate in from the depth of our psyche, and learning from them can indeed be part of our journey to healing and wholeness.
Our dreams often offer us an awareness of that which is temporal, and as a result pinpoint those areas we have struggled with and failed, inviting us to transcend and rise above the ashes of the former ruins that have become psychic debris to be eliminated so that we can move on.
We cannot reasonably expect “transformation” without being willing to undergo the processes of profound change. When “metanoia” is reduced to a one-time event and not a life-long practice, “transformation” is just a buzz word, and hype.
With discernment it is possible to reach the utmost heights with the minimum of exhaustion. Without it there are many who despite the intensity of their struggle have been quite unable to arrive at the summit of perfection.
- Abba Moses The Ethiopian Of Scete
For a mind which lacks an abiding sense of direction veers hither and yon by the hour, and by the minute is a prey to outside influences and is endlessly the prisoner of whatever strikes it first. - St. John Cassian
At certain times, Providence will permit new beginnings to overtake us without our immediate awareness. It is only then that we discover that the door to returning to a former season behind us has been barred shut (by grace), and the only option is to move forward.
For every crisis moment where we can feel fettered and hemmed in, there are also chairos moments, "opportune moments", that open up before us to bring benevolence and a promissory note of a hopeful future.
