Minilla's name was chosen through a campaign held by Toho with as many as 8,211 applicants, with 135 suggesting the final name. An official naming ceremony was held to reveal the name after 「Son of Godzilla」 was well into production; as such "Minilla" is never spoken onscreen.
In the 2025 IDW comic 「Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens」, rather than Mecha-King Ghidorah being a form of the regular King Ghidorah, its organic parts are cloned from him by the Xiliens. The Simians later reanimate the real King Ghidorah as "Frankenghidorah" in order to fight it.
@TitanEsper54 Dark Horse's G-Force is almost certainly inspired by the Fantastic Four, even consisting of two married scientists, one of their closest friends, and the female scientist's younger brother.
Though the fictional military organization G-Force debuted in the 1993 film 「Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II」, it is pre-dated by an organization of the same name that debuted in Dark Horse's 「Godzilla Color Special」 comic the previous year in 1992.
Composer Masaru Sato was born on this day in 1928. Masaru Sato scored four Godzilla films, including Godzilla Raids Again (1955), Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966), Son of Godzilla (1967), and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974). His compositions would later return in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), continuing his influence on the franchise.
The new RE:BOOT Monsters in 「Godzilla Battle Line」 aren't the first time Shinji Nishikawa has designed a new form of Biollante or a Ghidorah-hybrid form of another monster, as he also designed Biollanteghidorah for the 1992 anthology comic 「The Godzilla Comic Raids Again」.
Though Monster X is only seen transforming into Keizer Ghidorah in 「Godzilla Final Wars」, the last issue of the IDW comic 「Godzilla: Rage Across Time」 depicts him as being able to switch back and forth between both forms.
We are very sad to hear about the passing of Yoshihiro Nishimura, who passed away today at age 59 from liver cirrhosis.
Nishimura was a piller of J-Horror and Splatterpunk, his work has left a tremendous impact on special effects and makeup.
Our thoughts are with his family.
Before it was decided to be a giant toad, the monster initially known as Gebara was planned to be designed after a mole cricket. This motif was previously considered for the Meganulon from 「Rodan」, and would also influence the earliest designs for Megalon.
Gabara from 「All Monsters Attack」 was originally named "Gebara," as seen in concept art. However, the name was changed because of the 1969 film 「Che!」, which was released in Japan as 「Guevara!」, as both "Gebara" and "Guevara" are spelled identically in katakana.
Artist Kako Yodane based his early concept art for both forms of Biollante on kaiju he had previously designed. He based his design for Biollante's first form on Darling Moray from 「Emergency Directive 10-4·10-10」 and her second form on Leogon from 「Return of Ultraman」.
Episode 8 of 「Ultra Q」, "Terror of the Sweet Honey," uses stock footage from the Toho films 「Rodan」 and 「The Mysterians」. Footage from the ending of 「Rodan」 is used to depict a volcanic eruption, with the two Rodans still visible burning in the lava flow.
Publicity stills for 「Frankenstein vs. Baragon」 (1965) extensively feature Baragon spitting bolts of electricity from his mouth, rather than the magma heat ray he spits in the film itself.
In 「King Kong」 (2005), the character Jimmy reads Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella 「Heart of Darkness」. The book would later be referenced in 2017's 「Kong: Skull Island」through the names of characters James Conrad (named after the author) and Hank Marlow (after the protagonist).
Shockirus, the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens, and Godzilla himself were the only Toho characters featured in Dark Horse's licensed Godzilla comics. Stand-ins for other Toho kaiju such as Soran (Rodan), Kamerus (Anguirus), Inagos (Mothra), and Cybersaur (Mechagodzilla) also appeared.
The unlicensed parody anthology comic 「Insane」 #1, published by Dark Horse in 1988, extensively featured Godzilla in its stories along with a host of other unlicensed monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, Baragon, King Kong, and Gamera.
Stephen Bissette designed a King Ghidorah stand-in while working on the 1987 「Godzilla, King of the Monsters Special」, though it did not end up appearing in the finished comic. He also designed a more obvious Mothra stand-in, though it was seemingly dropped in favor of Inagos.
