From mobility and displacement, climate change and the energy transition, peace and security to Africa's geopolitical agency, every challenge the continent faces, and every opportunity before it, is at its core a matter of governance and leadership.

None of the challenges can be addressed, nor Africa's vast opportunities seized, without transformative leadership and governance.

I am glad to join a community building the critical mass of African leaders equal to the task at hand, and ahead.

Under the leadership of President @FrancisGatare and with ASG colleagues, I look forward to contributing through teaching, research, and deliberative policy engagement on Africa's pressing issues and its place in the global system.

I had a very constructive and productive meeting with DPM & FM of Ireland @MichealMartinTD this evening on a range of issues of far-reaching importance for Tigray. The implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, the challenges that we continue to face in our efforts to return IDPs & to restore constitutional status of Tigray, recovery and reconstruction efforts in the region as well as the further strengthening of Ireland’s support to various projects in Tigray, among other issues. @MichealMartinTD underscored his government’s commitment to further enhancing its engagement in the areas of development, human rights and international humanitarian law. He also expressed his country’s resolve to help the Region in the areas of health, education and good security. We also exchanged views on the multifaceted challenges facing our country & the whole region and possible ways of addressing these challenges. I took the opportunity to recognize and express gratitude to Ireland’s unwavering stance on advocating the cause of Tigray during the devastating war on the Region. I also thanked the outgoing ambassador of Ireland to Ethiopia Ambassador Nichola Brennan of @IEAmbEthiopia for her exemplary work in helping out our people throughout her term.

I met and had discussions early this evening with @EUSR_Weber on a number of issues of concern for Tigray, Ethiopia and the region at large. It was a rather candid no-holds-barred conversation. I took the opportunity to express my concerns regarding the progress as well as impediments in the implementation of Pretoria, our refugees in Sudan, territories still occupied by non-ENDF forces including Eritrea, and more importantly the need to factor in the tenuous nature of Tigray’s direct representation in the federal arrangement in external initiatives to help in the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in Tigray and other regions. We both agreed on the need to continue to work closely with the federal government and the international community in coordinating our efforts to address challenges bedeviling the region.

Yesterday, we conducted the second round of the Strategic Reflection Meeting of the AU Panel and took stock of diverse issues pertaining to the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. Political dialogue, DDR and return of IDPs were discussed at length. While acknowledging progress in the return of IDPs, the parties have also underscored the need to expedite the process in a manner that fully addresses the concerns of the people severely affected mainly in Western Tigray. Also raised during the meeting was the reinstatement of TPLF as well as the repatriation of Tigray refugees in Sudan currently facing the specter of senseless violence. The representatives of the two parties also met and briefed AU Commission chairman Mussa Faki Mahammat. The strategic reflection Meeting was largely cordial.

Today I met & held discussion with Ms. Sheena Sen Gupta, @UNICEF Global Director of Child Protection here in #Mekelle. Ms. Gupta was here in Tigray to visit UNICEF activities in the region and exchange views with regional officials on how to better coordinate her organization’s efforts in various areas of endeavor including GBV, health and sanitation as well as nutrition as relates mainly to children and women. She also expressed her organization’s readiness to further enhance its support for IDPs. She also expressed her appreciation of the resilience that tigrayan women displayed even in the face of extreme adversity and vowed to explore ways of supporting programs that focus on improving livelihoods apart of routine humanitarian interventions. I took the opportunity to express our Administration’s appreciation of UNICEF’s stellar performance in most of the activities it has undertaken in Tigray and called on her to help scale up some of the successful models. I also expressed our government’s commitment to continue to work closely with the UNICEF and other organizations currently operating in Tigray.

The Tigray Interim Administration has decided to pull Tigrayan Forces out of Garjale and BaqloManaqia villages near Alamata to honor its understanding with the federal government & Amhara administration to make it easier for Tigrayan IDPs to return as part of the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. Similar moves to return more Tigrayan IDPs are in the pipeline.

Today I met and held discussions with Canadian development Minister #AhmedHussein on what needs to be done to ensure the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. He expressed his government’s commitment to support the efforts to deepen peace, to address the challenges standing in the way of progress and Canada’s unwavering support to recovery and rehabilitation efforts. While reiterating our commitment to lasting peace, we have also made it clear that there remain significant challenges ahead of us that require a concerted effort on the part of the IRA, the federal government and the international community to encourage bona fide engagement and to reign in unruly elements bent on setting the clock back on the COHA. The Minister also visited the war wounded as well as IDPs in and around Mekelle.
