No Resident Evil protagonist suffered more than Ethan Winters he was killed, mutilated, tortured, infected, forced to recover his daughter’s remains, had his heart ripped out, and still sacrificed himself to save his family.

⭕️ Hot Take: Ethan Winters is the character who suffered the most in the entire Resident Evil universe.

Every Resident Evil protagonist has experienced tragedy. They have lost loved ones, watched close friends die, and faced unimaginable horrors. Chris and Leon have suffered tremendously, especially Leon if we counted the CGI movies.

But by the time of Resident Evil 9, most of them are still relatively “okay.”

Ethan Winters, on the other hand, went through absolute hell.
Let’s count everything Ethan experienced, and I dare anyone to name another Resident Evil protagonist with a similar list.

❗️SPOILERS AHEAD FOR RESIDENT EVIL 7 AND RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE ❗️

⭕️- He believed his wife was dead

Resident Evil 7 begins after Ethan receives a message from Mia, his wife, who had been missing and presumed dead for three years.
That means Ethan spent three full years grieving, believing that the woman he loved was gone forever. Then, completely out of nowhere, he discovered that she might still be alive.

For the first time in years, he had hope.

⭕️- His wife attacked him

After Ethan finally found Mia inside that terrifying house, she suddenly became violent.
She repeatedly attacked him, tried to kill him, stabbed him, and even CUT OFF HIS HAND with a chainsaw.
Imagine spending three years mourning your wife, finally finding her alive, and then being forced to fight for your life against her.

⭕️- “Welcome to the family, son”

Ethan eventually fought Mia and believed that he had killed her.
Before he could even process what had happened, Jack Baker appeared behind him, knocked him unconscious, and delivered the famous line:

“Welcome to the family, son.”

As Resident Evil Village later revealed, Ethan did not simply lose consciousness during this scene, Jack actually KILLED HIM.

❗️At this point, Ethan had already spent three years grieving, found his wife alive, had his hand cut off by her, believed he had killed her, and was then murdered by a complete stranger.

And we were still only scratching the surface.

⭕️- The Mold

After Ethan’s death, the Mold reconstructed his body.
He woke up believing that he was still human
His severed hand was crudely stapled back onto his arm, and he continued moving without understanding what had truly happened to him.

⭕️- The Baker family dinner

Ethan then woke up during the infamous Baker family dinner scene.
He was tied to a chair, surrounded by a horrifying family, forced to eat disgusting food, threatened, humiliated, and tortured.

⭕️- The unforgettable leg scene

If Jack catches Ethan during a certain section of the game, he can cut off Ethan’s leg.
Jack then places the leg nearby and forces Ethan to CRAWL toward it before giving him medicine that allows him to reattach it.
Jack does not do this only to injure him. He does it to HUMILIATE him, and that was only the beginning

❗️Everything mentioned so far was practically the introduction.
Ethan still had to survive the Baker estate, fight Molded creatures, escape Jack and Marguerite, uncover Eveline’s true nature, and endure the psychological and physical horror of the entire game.

Jack Baker alone gave nightmares to countless players.

⭕️- The ending of Resident Evil 7

After surviving everything, Ethan rescued Mia.
Chris Redfield and his team took them into protective custody, and Ethan received military training to prepare him for future threats.
Later, Ethan and Mia had a daughter named Rose.

Finally, it seemed as though Ethan had earned a happy ending, Right?

⭕️- It all happened again

In Resident Evil Village, Ethan’s peaceful life was destroyed in a matter of seconds.
Miranda kidnapped Mia and secretly replaced her.
Ethan lived with Miranda while believing that she was his wife, without realizing that something was wrong.
Then Chris suddenly entered Ethan’s home, shot “Mia” repeatedly in front of him, took Rose, and had Ethan dragged away.

From Ethan’s perspective, Chris had just murdered his wife and kidnapped his daughter without any explanation.

⭕️- The missing fingers

Shortly after arriving in the village, Ethan was attacked by Lycans.
One of them bit off TWO FINGERS from his left hand.
Unlike many of his other injuries, those fingers never grew back.
For the rest of the game, Ethan carried a permanent reminder of what happened to him.

⭕️- The Four Lords

Ethan was captured and brought before Mother Miranda and the Four Lords.
They argued over who should be allowed to torture and kill him while he stood helplessly in the middle of them.
It was another disturbing scene similar to the Baker family dinner, except this time Ethan was being treated like a prize to be divided among monsters.

⭕️- He lost another hand

Inside Castle Dimitrescu, Lady Dimitrescu cut off Ethan’s right hand.

AGAIN!

⭕️- His daughter was divided into pieces

Ethan eventually discovered that Rose had been divided into four parts and placed inside separate flasks.

He was told that collecting those pieces could somehow bring her back.

Imagine being a father and learning that your baby daughter had been dismembered, with her remains distributed among four monsters!

⭕️- Miranda ripped out his heart!

After Ethan collected all four flasks and prepared to save Rose, Mother Miranda confronted him.
She reached directly into his chest, ripped out his heart, held it in front of him, and left him to die.
Ethan was forced to look at his own heart before collapsing.

⭕️- The Resurrection

Ethan then learned that he had actually died at the beginning of Resident Evil 7, and he's alive because he is infected with the mold, yet even after learning this, Ethan did not stop.

⭕️- His final sacrifice

Ethan returned, defeated Miranda, and rescued Rose.

However, his body had begun to collapse.
Knowing that he would not survive, Ethan gave Rose to Chris and stayed behind.
He took the detonator and sacrificed himself to destroy the village, ensuring that Rose, Mia, Chris, and the others could escape safely.
After everything Ethan endured, he died alone while protecting his family.

⭕️Ethan Winters spent years grieving his wife. He was attacked by her, mutilated, tortured, infected, killed, resurrected, hunted by monsters, forced to collect the remains of his daughter, had his heart ripped out, discovered that he had been dead for years, and finally sacrificed himself to save everyone he loved.

Now I dare you, I double dare you to name another character in the Resident Evil universe who went through anything remotely similar to what Ethan Winters endured.
