It’s crazy how common this fetishized, petite-bourgeois delusion of capitalism is. “You should be allowed to accumulate indefinitely without it having any impact on governance despite the fact that the principle of accumulation organizes all of human production and exchange.”
@hecubian_devil Perhaps the lesson is that gleefully participating in imperialism and reminiscing fondly on your brutalizing of people abroad is a moral line in the sand and is indicative of a lack of moral or political integrity. We already knew enough about him to know he’s reprehensible.
@eggs_for_brekky@therealmugomar These people all have moral lines in the sand they aren’t willing to cross just to support someone nominally in favor of their policies. Unfortunately brutalizing Iraqis just isn’t one of the things they care all that much about.
@louisfoster4321@Mr_Batou_Cyborg@FilmThePoliceLA Planter guarded a torture camp in Iraq and made wildly misogynistic comments about women who were raped. I don’t see how you could possibly think he isn’t completely fine with brutalizing POC and women because he literally made a career out of it.
@CapoLaw@caramelcolored Those are very material reasons to have well founded doubts that this is a principled man that is genuinely morally opposed to the occupation in Palestine or American imperialism. He’s never critiqued that part of his past so there’s no reason to think he’s grown.
@CapoLaw@caramelcolored The issue isn’t just “being in the military”. It was choosing to serve after he was already aware of the immorality of the war, posting about how much fun war was for him, choosing to serve in a PMC after his military service. He loved being an invader.
@devinfartsy @caramelcolored Idk much about how much Hasan did or didn’t endorse him but there was certainly many people who were willing to downplay his past. It should be a moment where we reflect and try to work towards path forward that has no room for american chauvinism.
@devinfartsy @caramelcolored I think there is absolutely value in reflecting on why so many people in the American left were willing to accept how gleeful Platner was to participate in brutalizing people abroad. Someone that fulfilled by violence is both morally repugnant and obviously untrustworthy.
And obviously him being a rapist is disqualifying, but why is this the straw that breaks the camel’s back for you and not everything else we already knew about him?
I just don’t understand how this is any more disqualifying than his open admissions of enjoying killing Iraqis and afghans and choosing to serve multiple times, including with a PMC. As cynical as I am I still somehow underestimated how deep chauvinism runs in the American left.
Like how is someone who was wholly unrepentant about all the people he murdered during an invasion and has talked about how fun war is for him not literally the ultimate red flag for him being a vicious psychopath? Introspect on why you’re so okay with killing Muslims.
