Thank you for stopping by! I am not leaving Tumblr just yet, but I want to continue to support those who are! I'd also like to provide anyone still interested in my own content with a way to keep up with my work without having to log in to that site. So, here I am! Hello!
Been a while.

Gosh, I am hoarding so many semi-completed messy transcripts of Studio Trigger events and games and streams....
(The last polished one I posted was the fourth live-drawing stream with Mago, which was over a year ago now.... 😞)
If you're interested in non-verbatim transcripts of more Studio Trigger streams, I've posted others:
Tetsuya Sakurai (Kill la Kill): https://t.co/bULmMIxObV
Mago (Trigger Girls, Luluco): https://t.co/F3Di803LTQ
(Highlights) Hiroyuki Imaishi (Promare): https://t.co/WKbcylDxEv
Studio Trigger's BNA live-drawing session with Genice Chan just finished up!
I tried to live-transcribe the stream, but this was LONG! Even with breaks, exhaustion stopped me at hour 5 out of 8.
I might post more highlights someday, but here's the VOD! https://t.co/wxc06WOHKi
...is an art that doesn't get enough credit. To me, true accuracy lies in the "heart" of the message rather than the specific words, and I really appreciate when anime dubs embrace that. It's always gonna be an interpretation for me, and I love having access to creative ones.
Something that stuck with me from Sakura-Con's 2019 localization panel was the discussion around Marie Kondo's catchphrase, "Sparks joy." Specifically, as Nicoletta Richardson's article below explains, these are really the words of translator Cathy Hirano.

Personally, I love English dubs of anime because I *know*, as someone not fluent in Japanese, that I will always be relying on a translator's interpretation. A dub script that has fun with the material, that takes creative liberties but maintains the "spirit" of the original...
LRT, that thread is an excellent discussion on the common anime debate of "subs versus dubs," well worth a read.
For the specific Kill la Kill example, Trigger didn't have a say in the casting like with Promare, but it's good to know that alterations did have to get approved.
As an aside, it's kind of interesting that Michiru has an official birthday. In other anime that Kazuki Nakashima has written (like Kill la Kill and Promare), he's pointedly refused to give characters b-days because he doesn't want horoscopes and such influencing interpretations.
I didn't want to crosspost this on Michiru's birthday, but here is my opinion on Brand New Animal and why I probably won't be talking about it much.
But it's worth noting that there *are* now official English subtitles available on Netflix Japan!

@Shinden9 I get that you don't like the dub, and that's fine! It does take a lot of creative liberties, and while I personally enjoy a lot of the changes myself, I get it. But this example doesn't feel like a fair criticism. It's an effort to preserve something easily lost in translation.
@Shinden9 I'm confused. I don't recall Ryuko ever making "overt gross sex references" in the dub. As for the potty mouth, it's a way of localizing her crude way of speaking in Japanese (yankii speech). Speaking coarsely is very honest to her character.
Well, I gave it my best shot 😅
I don't know if I just picked a really hard one or what, but I struggled something fierce with understanding the jokes. Any more insight is much welcomed!
If you'd like more of these, I'm also happy to take requests.

I kinda wanna do a visual gag breakdown of that Hallelujah now, aha. I feel like I've seen a couple of those that explained the puns and such?
But bah, Mako's representation of Senketsu here has him with BOTH his eyes, whereas she usually closes one eye when impersonating him 😭
