An interesting little detail I noticed on my second viewing of Backrooms (2026) - when Mary first walks into Clark's store, the camera angle makes it look like the Captain Clark statue is watching her, which sort of serves as a sign of things to come considering she gets chased by Captain Clark later on in the film when she's inside the Backrooms
Robert Eggers on why his film Werwulf is set in 1300:
"I learned that basically because of protections for the wool trade, there was a big effort to get rid of all the wolves in England. It was pretty successful. So the movie takes place around 1300, and that’s as late as it could be because once there were no wolves in England, there was no more werewolf lore in England. That became interesting, that it was going to be set so medieval."
The redheaded Still Life in Backrooms (2026) is based on Barbara, Clark's ex-wife who left him because of his drinking. Earlier in the movie she's hostile, chasing him and screaming. Later on she's totally passive, doesn't even react when he hurts her.
The reason is that the Backrooms isn't actually showing the real Barbara, it's showing whatever Clark currently believes about her. Early on he still feels guilty about the divorce, so she comes back angry, basically his guilt with a body attached. By the time we get to the dinner scene he's been alone for weeks convincing himself none of it was his fault, that he was the one wronged. Once he believes that, there's nothing left in him generating her anger, so she just stands there still.
I made this with reference from NieR, and this is also an artwork that makes me cry when I see it while listening to the song mili (;_;
"We couldn't wait to become adults
We dreamed, we grew
And now we are stuck In a grown-up's hellish paradise"
I hope you all like it
