@acoyne The problem with selling lower-value goods is it’s a race to the bottom unless you’re an exclusive supplier and can command rents. Maybe it works if you tariff the hell out of lower-cost countries, but it’s not a winning strategy for any business trying to win in an open market.
@michaelmiraflor Memory isn’t all it’s cracked up to be either because it’s just extended context. The models make no distinction between any topic-specific contexts within memory, and thus apply everything to all conversations—frequently in counterproductive ways.
@faisalislam The Canadian political system differs in one fundamental way from Britain: we banished corporate funding of political parties and capped individual donations at $1000 way back in the 90s. The effects of this are obvious when you compare Canada with other Westminster countries.
@erinotoole I’m surprised none of the commentators in the media have suggested taking Israel’s approach: acquire the airframe but completely rewrite the software with a domestically controlled version so missions won’t depend on the U.S. or Lockheed Martin.
@acoyne Do you prefer corporate welfare? U.S. taxpayers directly subsidize dairy farmers to the tune of $20+Bn per year. At least supply management keeps the taxpayer out of the equation.
@MarcGarneau Canada increased military spending by almost 3X between 1933-1938. Of course it can be done, just not the way we’ve been doing it as of late.
@mediamorphis I’m against speculation as much as anyone, but unless we’re talking about eliminating property rights all together, equating gains attributable to inflation and increases in the cost of living with income is disingenuous.
@mediamorphis Because you buy investments (your house, cottage, market securities) with income that has already been taxed at the full rate. If 100% of gains were also taxed, nobody would invest in assets of any kind other than housing they needed immediately to live in themselves.
@ednewtonrex@zippy731 It’s an excellent analogy. But even in those industries, you can’t just show up wherever you want and start digging. You need a licence (usually from the government) and you need to pay royalties (usually to the government).
@michaelmiraflor It resembles a lifted Lancia Delta—the car that dominated rally in the 80s and early 90s. Hard to understand how anyone who knows anything about car design would have a problem with that. At least it doesn’t look like it rolled off the same assembly line as every other SUV does.
@Murray_Brewster You quote the deputy minister: “we made a recommendation through the deputy minister and chief of the defence staff to the minister of national defence to proceed with that investment, and that was approved”.
So the defence minister agreed, took it to cabinet and then nothing?
