In 1992, an FBI sniper in the Idaho mountains shot an unarmed mother holding her infant daughter.

It started with Randy Weaver selling two shortened shotguns to an informant and then missing his court date.

A firefight broke out in the woods when US marshals finally moved in on him, killing the deputy marshal and Weaver’s 14 year old son as he was running back toward the cabin.
The next day, an FBI sniper fired through the front door, killing Weaver’s wife.

Weaver finally surrendered after an 11 day standoff. He was convicted of the firearms violation and missing court, but acquitted of charges tied to the shootout and later paid $3.1 million to settle their claims.

A Senate investigation found that the FBI’s rules of engagement in Ruby Ridge had violated the Constitution.
