The point is how tiny mountains are relative to the size of the Earth: In a basketball size Earth, Everest would be less than a hair's breadth tall, so nearly imperceptible to the touch

@lady_with_flaws The thing is, mountains really aren’t that tall when you compare them to the size of the Earth.

I once heard Neil deGrasse Tyson make an analogy: if you could shrink the Earth down to the size of a basketball, you wouldn’t even be able to feel the mountains with your fingers.

The International Space Station orbits at approximately 400 km above Earth’s surface. The extra cost of launching from a mountain isn’t compensated for by gaining just 3,000–5,000 meters of altitude.
