The human species has essentially been transformed into a giant profit-generating machine for corporations.

Under capitalism, humanity exists to serve the interests of the corporation. We are all livestock; beasts of burden used to carry margin expansion forward from quarterly statement to quarterly statement. Enjoyment of life has no value other than the extent to which it can be used to increase the net worth of the shareholders.

That’s why everyone’s so unhappy. We’re not living with purpose. We’re not working together to build a better world and a better future, we’re just pulling levers to turn gears to make the arrow line go up on the graph in the conference room. It’s a hollow, pointless way for people to live.

It makes our whole culture vapid and soulless.

Music is made to be as profitable as possible, which means giving it the broadest possible appeal using formulaic song structure calculated to cause a chemical response in the largest number of human brains.

Movies are designed to draw the largest possible box office revenue at the lowest possible risk to studios and investors, often by just rehashing a movie that’s already proven successful in the past or by slapping together a story about an IP with pre-existing mass appeal.

Food is made to be fast and addictive rather than nourishing.

Healthy human connection has been commodified as social media intertwines with friendships and dating apps insert themselves into the development of romantic relationships.

Human sexuality is being warped and twisted as internet porn normalizes violence and degradation for the maximum number of clicks.

Attention and engagement have been monetized, creating an information ecosystem dominated by conflict and gossip designed to appeal to our baser instincts.

Advertisement is injected into every possible corner of our waking sensory experience, with any available space where the eye might rest or the ear might listen being flooded with psychological manipulation compelling us to consume. They’ll start running commercials in our dreams the instant they have the technology to do so.

You spend eight hours at the office working to generate corporate profits, then you come home and consume products to profit other corporations. You need your beer and snacks to unwind, your streaming services and social media to distract your mind from the stress of it all, your online clothing purchase to try to feel good about yourself, and your prescription drugs to get to sleep at night. People live their entire lives like this.

And that’s those of us who are lucky enough to be living in the global north. In the global south you get wage slavery and exploitation with far more toil, far less relaxation time, and no cheap products made by impoverished workers on other continents with which to comfort yourself.

All of humanity has been roped into this mess. And for what? To make the numbers in some bank accounts increase. To get some green arrows pointing upward on the stock exchange. To enable a few billionaires to buy islands and elections.

All while destroying the biosphere we all depend on for survival.

This, we are told, is the best possible system we could possibly be living under.

I personally do not believe this is true. I personally believe we can have better. Those who benefit from this current arrangement are going to assure us it’s impossible and do everything they can to stop us from changing it, but we do have the means to reclaim the wealth, dignity and happiness that they have stolen from us.

They built this whole machine on our backs. All we need to do is stand up.

A new book by media critic Adam Johnson, How to Sell a Genocide: The Media’s Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza, documents how the New York Times used the term “Hamas stronghold” 154 times between October 2023 and October 2024, almost always while reporting on war crimes or pending war crimes.

Johnson shows the paper applied the label to all five of Gaza’s most populated cities, including refugee camps like Jabaliya, where an Israeli strike killed upwards of 120 people in an October 2023 attack. The NYT headline read: “Israel Strike Targets Hamas Stronghold in Dense Gaza Area.”

The book argues the framing militarized civilian areas in the public imagination to justify their destruction.

Republicans in North Carolina just proposed a bill that says if a woman is caught with an IUD or attempts to get an abortion then men are allowed to use DEADLY FORCE to try and stop her. They are proposing a bill that will allow men to kill women for using birth control. It’s House Bill 1232. Keith Kidwell is the Republican who proposed the bill. He claims it counts as self defense to use deadly force to stop abortion. This is a man who claims to be pro life. Feel free to give his office a call and let him know how you feel about his opinion.

And for anyone who says “obviously this will never get passed” that’s not the point. The point is it’s fucking insanity that a government official would even try to make a law like this. It’s insanity that there are men out there who are trying to make it legal to kill women for making decisions for their own bodies. This is real and it’s happening right now in front of our eyes.

“Billionaires already pay more taxes than you ever will” is one of the most financially illiterate arguments on this app because it confuses nominal dollars with effective burden.

A billionaire paying $500M in taxes sounds enormous until you remember they gained $20B in asset value while doing it. The relevant metric is percentage, not raw dollars. A teacher paying 22% of a $60k salary is carrying a heavier proportional burden than someone paying 8% while their wealth compounds tax-deferred through stock appreciation.

And this “their money was already taxed” line is mostly fiction at billionaire scale.

Middle-class wealth is usually income that got taxed, then saved. Billionaire wealth is overwhelmingly unrealized appreciation. Tesla stock going vertical did not mean Elon “earned” $100B in taxable salary. The shares appreciated. Under current law, that appreciation can sit untaxed for decades, get borrowed against for liquidity, then receive stepped-up basis treatment at death that can erase the embedded gains entirely.

That is not “double taxation.” In many cases it is functionally zero taxation on the primary mechanism of wealth accumulation.

People also weirdly talk about billionaires like they emerged from the forest carrying capitalism on their backs with no public inputs involved.

Their companies rely on:
public roads
public courts
public contract enforcement
public utilities
public universities
public research grants
public internet infrastructure
public IP law
public military-protected trade routes
public education systems producing labor

The modern corporation is not built in isolation. It operates inside an enormous state-supported framework.

And no, asking whether someone should contribute proportionally to maintaining the system that enabled $100B fortunes is not “greed.” That framing is emotional theater designed to avoid discussing the actual structure of tax law.

The real debate is simple:
Should labor income be taxed continuously while massive asset appreciation can compound largely untouched for generations?

That’s the argument. Everything else is distraction.
