So much discussion about "war hero" Karannagoda.. Seems to be forgetting that he is credibly accused of some horrific stuff.. A reminder 👇🏻

In 2009, during the final months of the war, then Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda filed a complaint with the CID, claiming he suspected his own aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Commander Sampath Munasinghe, of suspicious behaviour and possibly plotting to assassinate him.

The CID launched a confidential investigation and searched the officer's office and locker at Navy Headquarters. Instead of evidence of an assassination plot, investigators found a collection of civilian national identity cards, passports, and bank books.

When the CID cross-checked the identities, they found the documents belonged to young men who had disappeared in late 2008 from areas including Dehiwala, Mattakkuliya, and Kotahena. The investigation shifted from an assassination plot to the disappearance of 11 youths.

Investigators interviewed the victims' families and examined telephone records. They found that after the disappearances, the families had received ransom demands. Phone records traced many of these calls to Sri Lankan Navy camps in Colombo and Trincomalee.

The CID concluded that this was not a counter-terrorism operation but an organised kidnapping-for-ransom ring involving members of the Navy.

As the investigation progressed, it implicated several naval officers and eventually led investigators to a secret detention site known as "Gunsite" at the Trincomalee Naval Base. According to the investigation, the abducted youths were later killed to eliminate witnesses after ransom payments had been demanded.

One of the ironies is that Karannagoda's original complaint triggered the investigation that exposed all this. He himself later became a suspect, accused of concealing the activities of those under his command. But the legal proceedings involving him have been complex, there were attempts by the AGs Department to alter charges during the GR administration.

The families of the 11 missing youths are still waiting for final justice.

Maybe now it will finally come.
