A tourist visiting Ethiopia is warning travelers to avoid the country after he was shot at by federal police for making a wrong turn.

The man, Charles Wright, says he was forced to run through the desert to survive with a bullet in his foot.

"A few days before this video, I had already been shot in the foot by armed militants. I was driving back towards Addis Ababa to get proper medical treatment when I reached the Awash/Djibouti junction," he said.

"There were no signs warning of the mandatory customs turn-off, and no "No Entry" signs on the road I mistakenly drove down."

The man said he was then shot by federal police who jumped out of bushes.

"With an AK-47 bullet already lodged in my foot from the earlier attack, and a fractured foot, I abandoned my disabled car and ran through the desert to stay alive."

"After they caught me, they forced me to run through the desert on my injured foot while laughing at me. Property was stolen from the back of my car while it was in police custody."

The man said he was kept "under police guard" for six days, which he says was to pressure him into paying a bribe.

"This experience completely changed my view of traveling in Ethiopia..."
