A review paper titled “Designer π-Magnetism in Magnetic Graphene Nanostructures: Advances and Future Perspectives” is now online in NSR. Congratulations to Xinnan and all the authors! https://t.co/imEt2NREez
The number of grant applications is rising sharply. Our capacity for their evaluation isn’t.
ERC President Maria Leptin explains why stricter resubmission limits are being introduced for 2027 calls and what this mean for applicants.

New paper in Nature Chemistry: We find that on-surface radical ring-opening polymerization of [6]CPP on Cu(111), produces near micrometer-long poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) chains — far beyond typical polymer lengths obtained by On-Surface Synthesis.

My new favourite molecule published as VIP paper / front cover in @angew_chem Great collaboration with the groups of Jascha Repp and @Leo_Gross_IBM in the framework of @ERC_Research SyG MolDAM @axenciaGAIN https://t.co/PZT8dHmYPk
You see a half-Möbius body. Start somewehre on it and go around. You will need to go 4 times around to return to your starting position. We made a molecule with an orbital basis of such topology and switched the winding by atom manipulation. https://t.co/cmwmfFKxVu
Happy to share a new molecular topology. We call it half-Moebius. Even switchable between on, off and reversed winding. Exhibiting twisted orbitals, confirmed by quantum computing. https://t.co/cmwmfFKxVu
They dehydrogenate along one edge → poly(para-benzyne) intermediates → fusion into biphenylene nanoribbons.
➡️ Route to nonbenzenoid carbon nanostructures.
Great collaboration with @RalfTonner & the Schirmeisen group, first authors: @QitangF, Qigang Zhong
Result: ultralong PPP chains up to ~0.9 µm observed by STM/AFM. Because the reaction proceeds without halogen byproducts, the surrounding surface remains clean and so the PPP chains can engage in well-defined follow-up reactions: 3/4
