Patriotic Alliance Clears Kenny Kunene of Wrongdoing in KT Molefe Controversy

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has officially cleared its Deputy President, Kenny Kunene, of any wrongdoing following allegations linking him to Katiso “KT” Molefe, a businessman facing charges related to the 2022 murder of Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.

The controversy began in July 2025, when Kunene was present at Molefe’s Sandton residence during a police raid. Kunene explained that he had accompanied a young journalist from African News Global who sought to interview Molefe. Despite this explanation, the PA suspended Kunene for 30 days to conduct a thorough internal investigation.

After reviewing the circumstances, the PA concluded that Kunene had acted appropriately and was not involved in any criminal activity. Party leader Gayton McKenzie stated that Kunene had been “set up” and reaffirmed that the PA does not tolerate associations with criminal elements. Following the investigation, Kunene has been reinstated to his leadership position.

Kunene, who previously resigned from his positions as Johannesburg MMC for Transport and city councillor amid the controversy, has also been confirmed as the PA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg in the upcoming 2026 elections.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has criticized Kunene’s explanation, labeling it “laughable” and calling for his resignation. However, the PA maintains that its internal review substantiates Kunene’s account and emphasizes the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

The incident, which attracted national attention, highlights the scrutiny faced by political figures when navigating complex legal and public relations challenges, especially in high-profile criminal cases.
