Early Work in Progress of our Crusader Knight wearing 14th century armour.
Historical detail you might find interesting:
Knights often wore their great helms over smaller helmets, like early bascinets.
Ruins of Seer. Designed 1978, World of Greyhawk outdoor adventure, offered to TSR for publication, Bruce Heard and Harold Johnson reviewed it in person but never got back to me about it. Set in the Duchy of Urnst. Many maps. Super adventure (128pp printed). DM overview map below.
These things show up all over the place in antediluvian and later heliolithic petroglyphs. Tolkien knew what the ancients knew: the elves came first. This is why the ancient sky-father deity was usually also a storm god or associated with lightening.
The Most Important Timber Framing Chisel and How to Make Square Peg Holes
People always get excited about a timber framing slick, and you obviously need a framing chisel. The most critical chisel in our lineup probably isn't what you expect, though!
Today we're looking at the most important chisel in our toolbox and how to make square peg holes. Square peg holes are essential for Japanese joinery and Japanese timber framing.
Back in the day, the Japanese didn't have any kind of drill or auger bit. (They did have a gimlet, but it wasn't used like a Western drill bit). Some people say that's why the Japanese made square pegs and holes. We don't know if that's the whole story, but we prefer square pegs.
(I rip them out on the bandsaw, then he uses a jig and a hand plane to taper them)
I know preservation is what we all care about, but fuck if I wouldn’t crack one of these open just to take in the smell of unfiltered tobacco and testosterone.
In 1999 climbers found George Mallory's body high on Everest, 75 years after he vanished, and the clothes he died in were still on him. They were wool, silk and cotton. In 2006 somebody put on an exact copy and climbed the mountain in it.
For decades the story had been that Mallory and Irvine were doomed by their kit. Tweed jackets and woolly jumpers at 28,000 feet. Brave amateurs, dressed for a grouse moor.
The body told a different story. Mallory was wearing 8 thin layers. Silk next to the skin, then fine wool, then more silk, more wool, a flannel shirt, and a windproof cotton outer woven so tightly it turned the snow.
Four British universities took fragments from the body and rebuilt the whole outfit, thread for thread. A mountaineer called Graham Hoyland wore it on Everest.
He reported that it was warm. It was also lighter than the modern down suit his companions were wearing. The silk layers slid over the wool, so he could move his arms freely, which a man in a padded plastic suit cannot. The wool held its warmth when damp with sweat. He said he would have been comfortable going for the summit in it.
The researchers concluded the clothing was fully up to the job.
So the gear of 1924 was not the weak point. A sheep and a silkworm had solved the problem of the coldest place on earth, at less weight, before anyone had invented nylon.
Then we spent a century replacing it with petroleum and told ourselves the men who came before were underdressed.

Halloween is Catholic.
It’s All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before we celebrate All Saints’ Day and remember the faithful departed.
In England, Christians would go door to door asking for treats. They offered to pray for the departed souls of the families who welcomed them. Over time, this tradition developed into what we now know as trick-or-treating.
Catholics don’t need to run from Halloween.
Dress your children up.
Go trick-or-treating.
Have a bonfire.
Eat candy.
Celebrate.
And then remember what the night is pointing toward:
The saints.
The holy souls.
And ultimately, Christ.
Halloween doesn’t belong to the devil.
It belongs to Jesus and His Church.
