Tonight, @Keir_Starmer and @wesstreeting have decided to cut the number of offered specialist training jobs for doctors.
Doctors need these jobs to train to become the specialist Consultants and GPs of the future that the NHS so desperately needs.
Instead, this Government has decided to make it harder for you to see a specialist and is effectively holding doctors’ jobs hostage.
We are already an under-doctored country compared to other OECD countries. In 2025, around 40,000 doctors applied for just 10,000 speciality training jobs.
That means tens of thousands of qualified doctors ready to train, ready to work, and ready to treat patients are being turned away every year.
The Government can train more specialist doctors when they want to.
They are simply choosing not to.
Remember this the next time you can’t get an appointment or your surgery is delayed.
There’s a reason it takes weeks to see your GP & years to get your surgery.
The UK is an under-doctored country; yet thousands of doctors are being blocked from progressing to become Consultants & GPs because the Government has artificially capped the number of speciality training posts.
In 2025 alone, there were 20,000 more applicants than there were training spaces. Doctors are ready to care for patients; but they are left waiting, unemployed, or even forced abroad.
We are short of NHS doctors yet we’re still not employing the ones we already have.
This is the result of years of catastrophically bad workforce planning. @wesstreeting’s proposed plan for 1,000 extra speciality training posts over three years barely scratches the surface of the crisis.
If he’s serious about fixing the NHS, he must address this head on. Until then, both doctors and patients will keep paying the price.
We don't have enough doctors for patients to see but we have so many unemployed doctors, it makes no sense! Do better 👏👏👏 and listen to doctors, health care professionals and patients who are calling for change!
"We don't have enough doctors and yet thousands of doctors are unemployed." Dr Arjan Singh explains the paradox of the NHS workforce in England and why 97% of FY1 doctors balloted for strike action to end the unemployment crisis.
Can’t get a GP appointment. Granny stuck on a trolley in A&E for 12 hours waiting to be seen. Doctors replaced by non-medically qualified Physician Assistants. Meanwhile, doctors without training jobs are delivering pizzas to make ends meet. What a crazy world!
There are reports that @Keir_Starmer is going to scrap the Mental Health Investment Standard. At a time when referrals to services and waiting lists are at record high. That can’t happen. We’re asking Keir Starmer to immediately re-commit to this investment standard. And go a step further. We want a Young People's Mental Health Investment Standard. A guarantee that money for young people’s mental health is protected. Young people deserve to get the support they need, when they need it.
