After contracting Ebola while serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Peter Stafford has been discharged from the hospital in Berlin, and he and his family have been released from quarantine.

“On behalf of our family, I would like to express our deep gratitude to God for preserving Peter’s life and to everyone who has prayed and continues to pray on our behalf,” shared Rebekah Stafford.

We thank God for His mercy, for the countless people who prayed, and for the Congolese, American, and German medical professionals who cared so faithfully for the Stafford family.

As we celebrate this news, our hearts remain with the Congolese medical community: doctors, nurses, and frontline workers who continue to care for the sick every day, often with far fewer resources and far greater risks.

Please continue to pray for those still affected by this outbreak and for the healthcare workers serving them.

As Dr. Peter Stafford’s health deteriorated and his Ebola symptoms intensified while serving in Congo, he could no longer walk to the evacuation transport on his own.

He needed others to hold him up.

That image has stayed with us.

It’s a picture of 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 in action.

Because of generous donors, Peter’s illness initiated a response across all of Serge — coordination across multiple countries, support from regional leadership and staff teams, advocacy for Congolese medical professionals and communities, ongoing care for missionaries, and so much prayer.

While three people from our team of medical care providers in the DRC were evacuated, hundreds of their Congolese colleagues remain in the fray. Please continue to pray for Peter to be healed, for Rebekah and their kids, and for Patrick to remain well. But along with those three prayer requests, please also pray for these three: Nurse Tony, Laboratory manager Placida, and Kitenge Richard (the doctor who is heading the response). Every day in remote places, a pregnant woman desperately needs medical care. Due to a lack of quality healthcare, either the mother or the baby, or both, will die.

But medical missionaries are changing that. They provide life-saving medical care that you and I take for granted.

Peter shared, “Before I was evacuated, I was feeling really concerned I wasn’t going to make it. And now I’m cautiously optimistic.”

We are deeply grateful for the doctors, nurses, and medical teams caring for Peter around the clock, as well as the many people who have prayed, served, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes during this crisis.

“Words cannot express our gratefulness to God for His mercy, to our global community of workers and supporters for their prayers, and to the dozens of competent, dedicated medical and civil servants who worked day and night to make these evacuations possible.

But words also cannot express the depth of our grieving concern for the DRC and Uganda. The breadth of the spread of Bundibugyo ebolavirus remains unclear, the international response is just beginning, and we now have two Congolese colleagues confirmed positive in hospitals we support.

‘Lord, have mercy’ is our prayer, and ‘let us rally to do our work’ is our cry.”
