My son had been dating a wonderful woman for about 8 months.

Recently, they had one of those conversations couples eventually have:

"How many people have you been with?"

The young lady answered honestly.
She said 11.

The moment those words left her mouth, my son completely lost his mind.

He started calling her every insulting name you can imagine.

She sat there trying to explain herself while he kept attacking her character until tears started rolling down her face.

That's when I stepped in.
And what I said next changed the entire room.

I looked at my son and said:

"Funny how you're judging her for 11 when you've been with over 80 women yourself."

The room went silent.
But that wasn't even the part that shocked her...

The young woman's eyes widened.

My son immediately jumped up and shouted,

"MOM!"

But I wasn't finished.
I looked him straight in the eye and added:

"And let's not forget that one time in your early twenties when you were experimenting and ended up with a man too."

The girl's mouth literally dropped open.

My son looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him.

Then he started crying.

"Mom, you promised you'd never tell anybody. I trusted you. It was one mistake."

I told him:

"You don't get to shame someone for having a past when your own past isn't spotless."

"If you can humiliate people, be prepared for your own secrets to see daylight."

The young lady wiped her tears, looked at me and quietly said,

"Thank you."

Then she walked out the door.
She never looked back.

And honestly?

I hope that was the day my son learned that respect isn't something you demand from others while refusing to give it yourself.
