I had an absolutely amazing week at #EGU25 last week.
I gave my first conference presentation abroad, leading to some insightful coversations and brilliant networking opportunities with both existing and new connections. Exploring the beautiful city of Vienna was an added bonus!
Just published in New Scientist "Can we rely on forests to soak up the extra CO2 in the atmosphere?"

I had the best time presenting at #BES2024 last week. I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my PhD research which lead to insightful conversations and valuable connections 🌳
📢New Root paper: Accesible AI model for ecologists fails to catch roots in complex mature forest soil images from minirhizotrons 😭. More collaborative work needed! https://t.co/NN3tZDxr84 lead by @GraceHandyPGR w @Abe_404@YaffarDaniela @nanimuelbert @iEESParis @BIFoRUoB
📢 Our publication ‘Variation in forest root image annotation by experts, novices and AI’ is now out in Plant Methods. We quantified variation in the annotation of roots in forest minirhizotron images between human annotators and a CNN 🌳

As always, I have had a fantastic couple of days at the CENTA conference 2024. It is always great to see my fellow students, learn about everyone’s research and this year it was especially fantastic to win the judges award for best short talk! @CENTA_NERC
📢📢full funded (EU-UK) PhD project with me @TCD_NatSci doing cutting edge stuff with automated root measurements to understand ecosystem greenhouse gas fluxes: https://t.co/NFlsz8XXhP #roots#phdposition#rootecology
Back to work after a great week at #IUFRO2024@IUFRO. Completed my first presentation at an international conference and thoroughly enjoyed learning about all aspects of forests from all over the world. Stockholm was also such a beautiful city to explore!
I have had a very enjoyable couple of days at the 2024 BIFoR annual meeting. It was great to hear from representatives across all the BIFoR research areas and even more exciting to come away as one of the winners of the poster competition!!
@BIFoRUoB #biforcon24
I had the best time at #npnextgen last week. Thank you so much @NewPhyt for putting on such a great conference.
I would recommend to any early career researcher so be sure to apply when @unibirmingham @BIFoRUoB host next year!!
Back from field trip teaching in Berlin, it was great fun to explore river flow movement measurement (flow meter, salt dilution, etc), river thermal analysis (below is a thermal image of the effluent outlet), and SUDS used to mitigate urbanization effect. @GeogBham@LES_UniBham
#EGU24 - Join me and my team for:
2) Tuesday 16 Apr 16:15–18:00 Hall X1.42: Imogen Carter will present our @BIFoRUoB work as a poster on root identification by humans vs AI in Hall X1- session BG3.13
Unfortunately I cannot make it to EGU in person this year but the amazing Imogen Carter and @M_ecohydro will be around to discuss what we have been working on 🌳 #EGU24
#EGU24 - Join me and my team for:
3) Wednesday 16 Apr 14:00–18:00 Hall X1.39 for @GraceHandyPGR poster on "Root Dynamics Under Elevated CO2 in a Free Air Carbon Enrichment (FACE) Experiment"from @BIFoRUoB
Well done @micucci_gianni! New paper offering prospects for measuring denitrification: a difficult N cycle process to measure!!! @fotis_sgour @BIFoRUoB @iseult5@stefankrauseh2o

Hi the UK rooty community, we have got some serious issues with our minirhizotron system from @VSI_Austria preventing our PhD student @GraceHandyPGR to do her campaign in March. I wonder, if somebody could borrow us one ? until we find a solution 😀 @BIFoRUoB
