By Mulenga Chipampe Makasa
A joint enforcement operation by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) led Task Force on Fuel Smuggling and Vending has uncovered an illegal fuel storage operation in Lusaka, leading to the seizure of 6,480 litres of petroleum products and the arrest of eight suspects.
According to a joint statement issued , the operation exposed coordinated illegal fuel activities involving the siphoning, concealment and distribution of petroleum products.
During a raid in Lusaka’s Industrial Area, officers discovered a concealed underground tunnel that was being used to store approximately 4,500 litres of petroleum products kept in 40 litre containers.
Authorities suspect the fuel had been siphoned from tanker trucks, with investigations still underway to identify all individuals connected to the illegal operation.
The enforcement exercise was later extended to Kanyama, Zanimuone and the Chifwema area, where officers made further seizures.
The Task Force says all the suspects remain in lawful custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
