1997年8月31日凌晨，戴安娜王妃（Diana, Princess of Wales）与男友多迪·法耶德（Dodi Fayed）离开巴黎丽思酒店（Hôtel Ritz Paris），为摆脱狗仔记者的尾随，乘车驶入阿尔玛桥隧道（Pont de l’Alma tunnel）。车辆严重超速，撞上隧道内的混凝土立柱，司机亨利·保罗（Henri Paul）与多迪·法耶德当场身亡，戴安娜被紧急送往巴黎皮蒂‑萨尔佩特里埃医院（La Pitié‑Salpêtrière Hospital）抢救。
法国调查证实，司机亨利·保罗存在酒后驾驶、服用镇静药物的情况，车辆进入隧道时车速远超隧道50公里/小时限速；车上仅有保镖系了安全带，加剧了伤亡后果，戴安娜经两小时手术抢救无效，于凌晨4时宣告死亡。
戴安娜的前夫查尔斯王子（Charles, Prince of Wales）连同戴安娜的两位姐姐飞抵巴黎，前往医院致谢救治的医护人员，法国总统雅克·希拉克（Jacques Chirac）夫妇亦到场。查尔斯随同覆盖王室旗的灵柩搭乘皇家专机将戴安娜遗体护送返回英国。
9月6日，戴安娜的葬礼于伦敦威斯敏斯特教堂举办，送葬队伍从肯辛顿宫出发，大量民众沿街默哀送别，伦敦街头到场悼念民众超过100万，全球约25亿观众通过电视直播收看这场葬礼送别戴安娜。葬礼结束后，戴安娜被安葬于家族庄园奥尔索普庄园（Althorp）的湖心小岛之上。
