UNAPPRECIATION IN MARRIAGE : Spouses Who Don’t Appreciate What They Have
Proverbs 18:22 (NKJV)
One of the silent destroyers of marriages is the spirit of ingratitude. Many spouses grow so accustomed to each other’s presence, sacrifices, and love that they stop seeing the treasure God placed in their lives. What once was celebrated becomes tolerated; what once was a blessing is now taken for granted.
In God’s design, marriage is a covenant gift, not just a contract. When a husband or wife fails to appreciate their spouse, they dishonor not only their partner but also the God who gave them that gift. Ingratitude blinds the heart, causing one to focus on flaws rather than virtues, weaknesses rather than strengths. The Israelites grumbled against manna because they lost sight of the miracle, and in the same way, many grumble about their spouse forgetting the miracle of companionship God gave them.
Appreciation fuels love, while neglect breeds resentment. A spouse who is never thanked, never valued, and never seen begins to feel invisible.
This lack of appreciation opens doors for bitterness, emotional distance, and even temptation. Scripture warns, “Give honor to whom honor is due” (Romans 13:7), and if anyone deserves it, surely it is the one who stands with you in covenant through life’s seasons.
Gratitude in marriage is not in grand speeches alone but in daily recognition: saying thank you, affirming sacrifices, speaking kindly, and celebrating even small efforts. Remember, many people pray for what you are despising. To appreciate your spouse is to keep the flame of love burning, to protect your home from unnecessary cracks, and to honor God who made you one flesh.

Prophetic Declaration
I declare today: My eyes are open to see the treasure God has given me in my spouse. I refuse the spirit of ingratitude, and I choose to honor, cherish, and appreciate the covenant God joined me into. My marriage shall be a testimony of gratitude, joy, and flourishing love in Jesus’ Name.
A man first receives mercy before he receives healing.
A man first receives mercy before he receives the blessings of God.

Mercy is the place of atonement.
When we are dealing with mercy. It is about sin and iniquity that makes you undeserving before God. We are talking about people whose sins have been covered/purged.
