People punish themselves because people around then still punish/judge them for their mistakes— with rejection, seclusion, ostracism etc— mentally, emotionally & socially.
They see those reactions & detest themselves.

I’ve been there. It takes the grace of God to overcome.

@benedictnomsu That's why I always encourage fellow Christians to give grace to believers struggling to stand.
Correct, rebuke, discipline, as it seems fit, but with love restore them. Encourage them to return to God again, because Satan traps most people with that quoted line above.
