Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Stokes are both mining oligarchs first and media owners second, which makes sense because the best way to keep your mining interests profitable is to own most of the press which might criticise your planet-warming actions.

Now they’ve been joined by another mining oligarch - Clive Palmer - to jointly ensure the Voice Referendum fails.

Why so much interest in a NO vote from mining oligarchs?

Simples: their fossil fuel investments will instantly be rendered less valuable if an Indigenous Voice to Parliament gets a Constitutional right to have an opinion on future laws to do with mining rights and assets.

If they succeed, it will be the biggest capture of Australian opinion since Julia Gillard was forced by Gina Rinehart, Twiggy Forrest and (again) Rupert Murdoch to back down on a mining levy which would have raised 50 or 60 billion dollars *every year* ad infinitum for schools, hospitals, social support and infrastructure.

That loss was a huge tragedy then, and the referendum loss will be a huge tragedy now. And together with the failure of sufficient climate action, it’s yet another sign that if we don’t fight harder against the depredations of the billionaires, we’re all fucked.
