Overdose has many guises. Education and prevention are better than cure. These need funding and sometimes it’s difficult to quantify success to funders. Make/keep #harmreduction autonomous. Encourage safe use, understand people will use drugs and carry #naloxone#IOAD2022
@dsnorthnorth Congratulations David, if you’re as passionate about this as you were in your previous role then North Northumberland and the Labour Party are extremely lucky.
York @ChangingLives__ are dedicated to deliver the best environment for those they support to achieve their goals and help sustain a home and future free from trauma. They have the knowledge and experience to understand and end homelessness in York.
One of our shared accommodation properties for women in York underwent a recent refurbishment.
Alongside this, we are beginning to develop another 3-bed property supporting women, expanding our gender-responsive and trauma-informed offer in our York accommodation 🏠
As part of this we will be working alongside our team at the Women's Wellness Centre to enable more dedicated support and activities to those residing in the supported accommodation.
We are also reviewing the support and work we do, now developing a 12-week floating support offer with the option to extend a further 4 weeks if this is required.
The majority of people we support don't require a full year of floating support. Once people stabilise a routine and are able to sustain rent and utilities, and needs are met, we've seen engagement naturally declines. With 12 clear support sessions, the focus is on addressing people's immediate needs, which enables independence leading to a flourishing and fulfilling life.
With this new work, we will be in a phase of evaluation to ensure that we are delivering the right support at the right time and will continue to assess our approach 💜

We are calling on the next government to break down barriers for people facing multiple disadvantage and social exclusion.
Society’s wellbeing is interconnected with the wellbeing of every individual within it. By tackling the root causes of disadvantage and the systems that keep people trapped in poverty, addiction and trauma, we can create a society where everyone is able to realise their full potential.
That's why we're asking all parliamentary candidates in the upcoming general election to commit to our pledges: Prevention, Resilience, Support and Equality. Read more ➡️ https://t.co/OKUkZPq5HL
Since November, current and ex-residents at Union Terrace have been given the opportunity to get involved in a construction project! 🏗️👷
Our residents with prior experience in construction have been part of building a training workshop in which they can teach a variety of construction skills to other residents.

@KiMcGuinness was so generous with her time when she visited our @ChangingLives__ women’s service in Sunderland. Kim understood its importance and benefits in supporting women suffering from homelessness and the resulting trauma.
‘Planned cuts to shelters in England will cost lives” says @guardian this is also about ignoring the experts both the charities/organisations and those with lived/living experience of homelessness.
Axeing homelessness services is a dangerous and short-sighted decision, but we estimate over 1,000 bed spaces are at risk through county council decommissioning proposals.
Reporting from @Robert_Booth on an issue facing many of our members ⬇️

When all the conversation is about Housing First it is important to remember it only works when it is part of a wider accommodation offer. People sometimes need 24 hour support . Similar to any issue we might suffer from there should be informed decisions and that means choice.
Gary's Story 📖
Gary is 33 year old and has experienced homeless for many years. When Gary came to our Union Terrace accommodation, he consistently experienced issues paying his top up, and has been on the verge of being asked to leave throughout his stay for various reasons.
At first, he doesn’t have any meaningful way to use his time and has minimal family support for such a young person. Gary doesn’t exhibit any major behavioural issues, but has struggled with his mental health and struggles to engage with resettlement.
Gary has currently achieved the outcome of safe, stable accommodation after working with us to create a repayment plan, with the goal of an onward referral once his arrears are below £300 👏
Working with Gary has reinforced many valuable lessons for our team at Union Terrace. Close joint working with other tiers of housing services, as well as external agencies, help effectively prevent street homelessness. A huge lesson is to know the importance of giving chances and adapting rules and regulations to respond to learning. Giving multiple ‘second chances’ can be life-changing for an individual who has lost faith in services, and never giving up on someone sends a powerful message that anyone can change their life.
Tonight, hustings will take place for the next Mayor of the North East.
Organised by One Million Women & Girls, the focus will be how the candidates will work for and support women and girls.
We'll be attending on behalf of the Transforming Together network, which we facilitate alongside @Agenda_alliance, and are looking forward to hearing more about how each candidate plans to support women with multiple unmet needs in the region!

Our York Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) team provide support to people facing multiple exclusion to break down barriers between accessing local support services.
Through the project, we provide support through the Housing First principles, an approach that prioritises immediate access to housing, with wraparound support offered after having a secure home base.

In 2023, our York Community Team successfully resettled 24 people into their own accommodation💜
The team also supported a further 71 people who we've worked with to address their housing support needs and have remained in their own homes 🏠

The Naloxone Knights are a peer-led group training the community in York to administer Naloxone 🏥
Naloxone counters the effect of opioid overdose rapidly and has saved many lives. The knights aim to educate about its life-saving effects, as well as reduce the stigma around addiction by promoting carrying naloxone.
We spoke to BBC Look North about the scheme. Watch the full report 👇
We're absolutely blown away by the support we received to deliver free meals to people in need on Christmas Eve. 💜
Because of your support, a total £114,720 was raised enabling us not only to provide the Christmas meal, but to continue to do even more for the people we support in 2024.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported this campaign in any way, to @neoffers for partnering with us, and for @nclcathedral for providing a venue. As well as a warm meal, we feel joy to have also have provided a space for people to connect, tell their story and feel heard at Christmas.
