The Afghan diaspora in the U.S. is under real strain, and old divides—ethnic, political, regional, and generational—are deepening. Pressure isn’t uniting Afghans; it’s driving them further apart. Different segments react through their own fears and past experiences. When the climate feels uncertain, people close ranks. Instead of responding as one, Afghans retreat into smaller circles, each trying to protect itself.

The shooting of two National Guard members—one killed, the other fighting for his life—made this fragmentation impossible to ignore. There was no unified response. Separate vigils and memorials appeared almost immediately, each group handling the moment alone. Distancing began quickly out of fear of collective blame. It wasn’t hostility; it was self-protection. But it revealed how fast long-standing fractures reactivate when Afghans feel exposed.

The generational divide reinforces this pattern. Older Afghan-Americans, settled and cautious, often seem indifferent or too busy to engage. Newer arrivals feel they carry the burden alone. Different instincts, same result: deeper fragmentation. And fragmentation has consequences. A diaspora split into smaller blocs becomes easier to generalize, dismiss, and ignore—especially in a tense national climate. Internal fractures weaken the community more than any external challenge.

This stands in sharp contrast to 2021. Whatever the U.S. government’s policies were in Afghanistan, ordinary Americans showed remarkable generosity. Veterans, soldiers, diplomats, and volunteers stepped in quietly, using their own time and resources, without regard for internal Afghan divisions. Those same Americans are now watching a diaspora fracture under pressure.

The political climate will shift—it always does. But the fractures Afghans deepen today will shape their credibility in the U.S. and limit whatever influence they might have in Afghanistan’s future.
