In tribute to Andrew Weatherall - who died five years ago today - we’ve published his April 1994 cover feature online.
Andy Pemberton met the British maverick at a pivotal moment in his career — his club night was confusing, his latest album disappointing, and his public image (in particular the aggressive, big headed, mad ‘genius’ persona Lord Sabre) had become ludicrous.
In a therapeutic discussion, Weatherall revealed his plans for reinvention. It’s an insightful profile of an extremist who believed trends are to be set, not followed.
Over the the next decade-and-a-half, he would sign to Warp with Two Lone Swordsmen, help establish trip hop as a cultural movement, and produce acclaimed albums and remixes for the likes of Fuck Buttons, Björk and My Bloody Valentine.
Weatherall was always one step ahead of the game. Without him, British electronic music would be very different. RIP 🖤
