Just wrapped up two days in northern Sweden with @Talga_Ltd, following the graphite supply chain from the Vittangi deposit through to the EVA plant, Talga's demonstration anode facility. Huge thanks to Martin Phillips and the team for showing us around.
Full video coming soon.
Shanshan, one of the leading Chinese producers of synthetic graphite anode materials, announces plans to bring online 150,000 tpa of integrated anode capacity in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, alongside 50,000 tonnes of in-house graphitisation.
The project carries a total planned investment of ~US$761 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027, with completion targeted for July 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

In our latest episode, I spoke with @khaitan_ankur, Managing Director and CEO of @TACCLimited, a wholly owned subsidiary of HEG Advanced Materials. TACC is building a 20,000 tpa synthetic graphite anode plant at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.
We cover:
- Why starting at demo scale has helped customer confidence
- Beyond 20,000 tpa: how TACC plans to grow alongside its customers
- Can an Indian anode plant compete with China? Ankur's candid take on cost, and why quality is the non-negotiable
- April 2027: how realistic is the timeline for a greenfield build?
- Why Ankur says this is "not a plug and play industry"
- Do oil prices change the economics? Needle coke, power costs and what's already secured
- What else TACC is working on: expandable graphite, graphene and an in-house silicon anode

Great to have been invited into @Talga_Ltd Cambridge R&D lab, spending the day with CTO Dr Anna Motta.
We got into what makes the Vittangi deposit stand out, from the exceptional grade of the deposit, and the crystallinity that lets the graphite hold its performance and handle fast charging, to the processing technology they've developed in house, to how pricing in these higher-performance niches varies from the typical anode pricing we usually see, and where anode, silicon and recycling are all heading.
Next stop, the EVA plant in Luleå.

Shanshan has confirmed that some of its anode prices have already been raised, the second top-three Chinese producer to do so after Zhongke Electric. The company did not disclose the size or scope, but the direction is now clear. After three years of falling prices, is the floor finally in?

According to @CnMetals, China's anode output reached 369,000 mt in August, a record for the month.
However, graphitisation capacity remains the bottleneck, so finished anode supply still can't keep pace with orders.
In addition, petroleum coke and needle coke prices remain high, graphitisation tolling fees are still elevated, and cell makers still hold the bargaining power.

According to Gaogong Industry Institute, China shipped 1.91 million tonnes of anode material in H1 2026, up 48% year-on-year.
Five producers we've tracked during this period shipped 893kt between them, close to half the market, with every one of them growing year-on-year.
Utilisation in China is rising and prices are recovering, but costs are rising just as fast, so margins haven't followed yet.
The graphite electrode market just lost another 51,000 tonnes of Western capacity. GrafTech International announced the permanent closure of its Monterrey facility, citing structural overcapacity driven by expansion in China and India. Production ends early Q2 2027, with output shifting to Calais and Pamplona.

In our latest episode, GraphiteHub spoke with Chip Dunn, Founder of Monomyth Group and Chairman of @M2Graphite (formerly Anovion).
We cover:
- The rebrand from Anovion to M2 Graphite and the Monomyth group structure
- The Nanograf silicon anode acquisition, why it sits in a separate entity, and the military SiOx strategy
- The AD/CVD outcome and the appeal now at the Court of International Trade.
- Why Chip sees battery makers as the ones who lose out. Every deferral in favour of cheap imports from China, Morocco or Indonesia pushes out the date domestic supply actually exists
- Where M2 sits on qualification: in conversations with virtually every major battery maker building capacity in the US, technical qualification achieved with several of the top 10, and the final commissioning-stage qualification still to clear before a contract can be signed
- Why Chip believes M2's cost structure can be at or below China's at scale
- The US$400M EXIM LOI, why existing DC programmes aren't built for early-stage producers, and why Project Vault is the sleeper
- Why Morocco and Indonesia circumvention won't play for long
- Why the US should stop thinking only about tariffs and start looking at export controls of its own, given China has already shown it will restrict graphite when it suits
- Military demand alone is too modest to support an industry, but ESS and data centres can make the national security case
- What's next for M2 Graphite

Great to see @GoI_MeitY Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) backing India's domestic anode capability. @EpsilonGraphite has secured ₹145 crore (~US$15M) in CAPEX support, equivalent to 25% of project's capital investment.
Looking forward to visiting their facility next month.

Last month @GraphiteHub toured @Renascor_ASX new PSG demonstration facility in Adelaide with Managing Director @_D_Christensen, opened by federal Resources Minister @MadeleineMHKing.
Run continuously, the plant can produce several hundred tonnes of purified spherical graphite a year.
As David put it, five years ago anode makers and cell makers asked "can you make it?" Now they ask "how will you make it, and where do you fit in the supply chain?" This facility is about proving it can be done at scale, day after day.
You'll also hear from Simon and Ben, covering the HF-free purification process, the co-located water treatment with SA Water that recovers caustic and reuses process water to improve the economics, and what the scale-up is teaching them ahead of the commercial plant.
