@jasonshiga @flantz Even if a substantial near-side impact occurred recently, though, odds are no naked-eye observer would see it. Without an atmosphere to generate a cool fireball, lunar impacts are little more than a puff of dust. You need a combo like Jupiter + Comet SL9 to get the fireworks.

@jasonshiga @flantz Depends on what you mean by “crater.” Microscale impacts happen on the moon all the time. We’ve caused a few tiny craters ourselves with spent space vehicles. But big craters? The vast majority happened during the Late Heavy Bombardment, long before any form of life.
