It feels wrong to challenge the publicity around anyone's suffering, but why are the media hiding the suffering of a Muslim guy and only talking about two Jewish people in Golder's Green?
Yes - there is antisemitism and that's bad and there are dangerous people in the world and maybe antisemitism had something to do with these attacks, and we should therefore examine the role of antisemitism in violence today, and address it, and everyone needs protecting from racists and dangerous people
No - that doesn't entitle anyone to mislead the public to support/enable/facilitate a pro genocide/pro-racism narrative and somehow suggest that standing up for what's right is encouraging antisemitism.
The most important way to fight antisemitism right now is to put as much distance between Judaism and the racist, genocidal state that is Israel, rather than keep conflating the two.
I hope those who were injured recover incredibly soon. I hope nothing like this ever happens again, but I am very afraid of what the future could hold for everyone. For Jews, I am very worried that when the economic crash happens, it will be blamed on Israel for pushing the USA into doing the Iran war, and because of the widespread conflation of Judaism with Israel, this will drive dangerous levels of antisemitism. Please, everyone, stop conflating Israel with Judaism.
The practicalities is what I want to know about. Agree in principle it's right, as otherwise we're just in a race to the bottom to appease the super wealthy. BUt I would like to see practicalities.
I was thinking it could mean taxing residential property being used commercially, by owners worth over 10 million. Or residential earnings into the pockets of people worth over 10 million, being taxed more
Immigration does need to be 'addressed' - but to come to a good opinion on it, I feel the need for seeing some 'good maths'. So what are the projected labour needs of the UK/anywhere, and what is the projected supply (hard to know with AI coming) and what kind of and how many immigrants do we need/want for those issues?
Do you have/know any good stats on this?
He is clearly discussing and thinking and therefore working on the economy. Absence of academic institution is not proof of absence of meaningful contribution. It's worth paying attention to as a sign that maybe he's not talking sense, but he is making a lot of sense.
But please do critique his ideas if you've time!
Kudos to you Gary. When I run into people sceptical of your arguments, all they ever say to explain themselves is "he wasn't as great a trader as he says he was". For me this is very significant - they have NO ARGUMENT against what you're saying at all. They just throw doubt on what is, for me, one of the least important elements of your argument/the 'Gary Stevenson story'.
Your experience and bets on why interest rates would stay low are very significant. Calling out lack of interest by economic academia in inequality is very significant. Your emphasis on addressing inequality as a priority lands very, very well.
That said, I do wish there was a detailed plan for how to address inequality, and a discussion about the pros and cons of different approaches. But keep going. This kind of ad hominem fr Rory is not how we're going to scramble out of the mess we're in now.
I fear my 'idea' Rory Stewart, that still projects integrity and commitment to noble causes, in my mind, is in danger of taking the same journey as my 'idea' Tony Blair. Blair was heartbreaking enough. I don't need any more of these betrayals. Rory, sort it out, asap please.
@tempuck92@AngryShadowYT@PeterMcCormack@garyseconomics I would like more detail on 'the plan' to address inequality, but to say he isn't an Economist is ridiculous. His ideas are very compelling, and I've not seen a good 'take down' of them yet (feel free to direct me to one) so he's an Economist if there ever was one.
@VladShumov_@PalantirTech Palantir the company is the ring of Sauron.
The real life palantirs are all our phones and cameras.
Palantir is the force that will bind all of this in the darkness for malign purposes!
All countries should aim to be strong, sure.
But the AI race could lock in the future of humanity. All countries need to unite now and share policy on this genuine threat to the future of our species.
Rather than race to get the best AI, let's all talk and stop racing altogether.
Let's cooperate on climate and AI and international law and aim for peace.
Let's all accept that if we pick the path of 'be first to get the best AI' - it's too much power in the hands of too few. It' s a recipe for humanity's end or enslavement.
We must all unite for a better planet, now!
@melsee5@GraceInklaar@koshercockney Team Israel has wanted to ethnically cleanse Palestine since before 1948, so shall we drop the "Israel is always the victim" card propaganda, shall we?
Yes. OMG indeed. I'm so angry I swallowed the BS narrative that it was crazy 'jihadists' vs 'reasonable' israel. OK, tbh I was suspicious of Israel, but every time I looked I was met with 'it's complicated' so I assumed smarter people had this figured out. Alas, there was a genocide, and my country and media were being totally weird about talking about it, so I did my research. See below evidence for Arabs and Hamas trying to make peace, and how Israel foiled it, thus making it difficult (I must assume) for doves in Hamas from keeping the more violent elements at bay.
A two state solution should have existed ages ago. Sadly, when Palestine, including Hamas, wanted to make this happen, Israel resisted, and continued with settlement building. Probably something to do with Israel's leadership wanting Israeli sovereignty from the river to the sea
Palestine has shown lots of evidence of wanting peace, but these overtures were clearly rejected.

Haaretz November 09, 2008 The Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, said on Saturday his government was willing to accept a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders... ...offer Israel a long-term hudna, or truce, if Israel recognized the Palestinians' national rights.

This is a proposal produced by prisoners in an Israeli jail - including prominent members of Hamas and Fatah.
The 18-point plan implicitly recognises Israel.

•“Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians ground to a halt in September 2010 when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to renew a partial freeze on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.”
•“The Palestinians then refused to return to talks as long as Israel built on land they want for a future state.”
•“Mr Abbas had indicated that the Palestinians would be willing to give up the September bid for recognition of a Palestinian state if long dormant peace talks with Israel could be resurrected.”

He added that the PA was seeking “serious guarantees for any peace process, first and foremost a cessation of all settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, and setting a clear political reference that would include ending occupation of the territories that were occupied in 1967, including east Jerusalem.”
Abed Rabbo said the Israeli government would be held fully responsible for any threats to stability in the region because of its refusal to comply with calls to halt settlement construction.

Hamas agrees to a Palestinian state in the pre-’67 borders, PA President Mahmoud Abbas told Al Jazeera on Saturday.
The same day that he announced issuing preconditions for future negotiations with Israel, Abbas said that Hamas and the PA have no ideological differences in terms of negotiations with Israel.
“We agree that negotiations with Israel can only continue if Israel freezes settlement construction. There is also agreement upon protests and not violence,” he said.

“After the vote, Illouz declared, "The message is unequivocal: Judea and Samaria are not a bargaining chip. The time has come for sovereignty."
The above quotes here are evidence that Team Israel is very much determined to erase Palestine. That it is Israel, not Palestine, that is the primary aggressor, and the one thwarting and preventing peace.
Humanity cannot thrive in a world without justice, and a common shared purpose for all of us to enjoy this earth we share.
Free Palestine.
@Tigman74@MiddleEastEye I'm not sure what Zog is but Israel does appear to have ridiculous influence in the USA, which given its record for genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, racism and apartheid, doesn't sound like a good thing
@hayimstorc@GraceInklaar@koshercockney They wanted peace. THey made peaceful overtures for years after 2005. Sadly Israel wanted to ethnically cleanse them, and had sympathetic media outlets hide this from the world.
It shouldn't have taken Oct 7th for us to realise all this - it didn't happen in a vacuum
@hayimstorc@GraceInklaar@koshercockney OK so you accept the IDF is wantonly violent and cruel to Gazans, and you'd like to blame the Gazans, who have nothing to live for, and suffer under Israeli blockade, to teach their children that they should not try to resist the cruelty inflicted on them.
@hayimstorc@GraceInklaar@koshercockney I too would fear the consequences of Hamas taking control of Israel, but that does not justify genocide. I fear what would happen if the prisoners in my country were all free with automatic weapons, but that doesn't justify bombing their houses while their families are with them
@hayimstorc@GraceInklaar@koshercockney https://t.co/vI2eoijs8S
You don't just flip into genocidal attitudes out of nowhere.
And what's the plan? To win the hearts and minds of the Gazans so they wouldn't do this again? The collective punishment approach does not work, as Israel must have realised by now.
