Every few months, some California politician dusts off the same line like it was engraved on stone tablets and personally handed down by Milton Friedman:
California is the 4th largest economy in the world.
Big is not the same thing as healthy.

A sumo wrestler and an NFL linebacker can both weigh 330 pounds. One is built for impact. The other might need a cardiologist and a knee brace. Scale tells you something. It does not tell you everything.

California’s GDP number tells us the state has a massive economy. It does not tell us whether ordinary people can afford to live there. It does not tell us whether the government is competent. It does not tell us whether the tax base is stable, the housing market is functional, or the middle class is thriving instead of quietly loading the family SUV and heading east like their on the Oregon Trail.
