Today, we brought together cities from across the UK and around the world for the first day of Global AI Cities 2026.
Senior digital, data and public service leaders shared real-world experience of putting AI into practice — what’s working, where the challenges are, and what needs to be in place to make it safe, fair and effective for the people who rely on these services.
Across the day, a few themes stood out:
🤝 Building trust so people feel confident in how AI is used
💻 Getting the right data in place to make it work
Using AI to support more resilient, preventative services
🧠 Making sure teams have the skills and confidence to adopt it
It was a chance to learn from each other, share what works, and recognise that while cities face different challenges, there’s lots we can do together.
A great start to Global AI Cities 2026, with lots more to come tomorrow.
How do we turn AI into real, trusted benefits for people?
Over the next two days, global city leaders are in Greater Manchester for #GlobalAICities2026, sharing what works and learning from each other.

Innovation isn’t just about tech hubs, it’s about everyday life.
We're backing new ideas that can make a real difference in people’s day-to-day lives, from high streets and hospitality to health, care and local services.
Greater Manchester is investing £1m to help innovators scale solutions that support businesses, improve services and strengthen communities across the city-region.
This is how we turn innovation into real-world impact, creating opportunities, supporting inclusive growth, and helping our economy work better for everyone.

Today, we remember the 22 innocent lives that were lost in the Manchester Arena attack on Monday 22 May 2017.
Our thoughts will forever remain with those affected and their families as we stand united with the Greater Manchester community. 🐝💛
People and partners from across Greater Manchester and beyond joined us and @right_hereUK to celebrate Live Well, community power and the amazing things being achieved in our communities - sharing stories, ideas and a million acts of hope. @DementiaDisco provided the soundtrack and @elevate_young troop really brought Live Well to life.
From improving access and skills, to supporting people to live well in their communities, the energy in the room was a reminder of what’s possible when we work together.
Throughout the event, people shared their hopes for the future – from more connected communities, to a Greater Manchester where everyone can thrive.
Swipe through some snippets of what hope means in our communities.
We'd like to thank everyone who has shown their support, because building a city region where everyone can Live Well doesn’t happen in one moment, it happens through collective action, every day.

🌈 Today, on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), we stand with and celebrate our LGBTQ+ colleagues, friends and communities across Greater Manchester.
Inclusion is more than a single day of recognition and the Progress Pride flag flies permanently at our Fire Headquarters as a visible commitment to challenging discrimination, raising awareness and creating a service where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.
GMFRS continues to play a key role in delivering our Greater Manchester Strategy, and this plan sets out the Service’s key areas of work over the coming 12 months.
Together, we’re building a thriving city region where everyone can live well in safer communities.
📢 Our Annual Delivery Plan 2026-27 is now live!
This is our second year of delivering the ambitions set out in the Fire Plan (2025–29) as we build on the momentum from the last 12 months.
The 2026-27 plan will look to impact how our firefighters train, how we deploy resources, how we support health and wellbeing and the investment in our stations and equipment.

Grateful for our fantastic staff networks 💛
A proud moment for our staff networks 👏
Yesterday, marking #StaffNetworksDay, colleagues from networks across GMCA and @manchesterfire proudly collected their Stellar Standard award in London.
A fantastic and well-deserved achievement - recognising the impact they make every day, supporting colleagues, amplifying lived experience and helping shape more inclusive workplaces.
Today, as the funeral of Eamonn Boylan OBE takes place, we pause to remember the lasting contribution he made to Greater Manchester and its people.
