Palestine was manufactured to masquerade as a national cause while advancing the reestablishment of the Islamic caliphate.

By refusing to submit to the Islamic project and insisting on a sovereign nation-state, Israel forced the region to accept the legitimacy of nation-states.

Without Israel, without a single sovereign, non-Islamic state planted in the Middle East, the path to reestablishing a caliphate would have been wide open.

A caliphate is more dangerous than the Nazis ever were. The caliphate once stretched from Spain to India, launching invasion after invasion into Europe.

If the Ottoman Caliphate had simply been replaced by an Arab one after its collapse, the West would have lived under constant threat.

That’s why Israel’s existence matters. Its very presence blocks the return of the caliphate.

Israel gives legitimacy even to the Arab nation states.

That's why Israel is the stumbling block in the eyes of the Muslim Brotherhood.

That is why they are obsessed with erasing Israel: without Israel, the dream of resurrecting the caliphate becomes possible again.

Spare us the lectures from comfortable Northern and Western Europeans who have never faced a real, declared casus belli from a larger neighbour that is also a NATO “ally.”

Greece spends close to or above 3% of GDP on defence year after year — higher than the vast majority of EU and NATO members — because Turkey openly maintains a threat of war if we exercise our sovereign rights under international law in the Aegean. That is not theoretical. That is a standing threat against a country of 10 million people. While you debate Ukraine aid percentages in air-conditioned offices in London, Brussels or Washington, we maintain conscription, buy frigates, fighters and missiles, and keep the armed forces on permanent alert against a revisionist power that occupies northern Cyprus, contests Greek islands, and has repeatedly violated Greek airspace and territorial waters.

You call us free riders on “Europe’s defence.” Europe’s defence in the southeast *is* Greek defence. We are the ones holding the line against Turkish expansionism, controlling the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean approaches, and absorbing the migration weaponisation that Ankara has repeatedly used against the EU (Evros 2020 being the clearest example). When Turkey pushed tens of thousands of migrants toward our borders, it was Greek forces — not Danish or Dutch ones — who stopped the breach of the European external border. You benefited. We paid the cost in blood, money, and political capital.

On Ukraine specifically: yes, our bilateral military packages have been smaller as a share of GDP than the Nordics or Baltics. That is not because we are indifferent. It is because a large share of our limited resources is already locked into deterring a direct, proximate threat that could escalate into war tomorrow. Countries that do not face an active casus belli from a peer military power have the luxury of treating Ukraine aid as their primary security contribution. We do not. We are simultaneously managing a frozen conflict, a hostile neighbour with a larger population and army, and the southern flank of NATO and the EU. Pretending these constraints do not exist is either ignorance or bad faith.

Ireland is neutral by choice. Belgium and Spain have spent years well below the 2% NATO target while living under the American security umbrella. Greece has been one of the few consistent high spenders precisely because no one else will defend the Aegean for us. Calling the country that has carried a disproportionate defence burden for decades a free rider is not analysis — it is selective moralising from people whose own homelands face no equivalent threat.

If Europe wants more Greek capacity for Ukraine, the first step is serious pressure on Turkey to drop the casus belli, end the daily airspace violations, and stop using hybrid tactics against EU borders. Until then, spare us the sermons about free-riding. We are already paying a higher price for European security than most of the people writing these tweets.

84 years ago, from April 1941 to July 1942, Jewish, Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian/Syriac men in Turkey were gathered in labor battalions in which no Muslim citizens were enlisted. This policy is also known as “the conscription of twenty classes.”

Instead of active service, they were forced to work under terrible conditions constructing roads and airports. Some lost their lives or caught diseases. In other words, these were concentration camps for non-Muslim, male citizens of the country. 

It was one of the many discriminatory policies by the Turkish government that aimed to impoverish and eventually annihilate non-Muslim citizens of the country.

As someone who grew up in the Muslim world, I’ve seen this pattern repeat itself:

When Muslims are weak and in the minority, they speak endlessly about tolerance, coexistence, and peace.

When they become strong and gain power, that tolerance completely disappears, even toward their own people.
