Green NCAP’s latest results show that the hybrid Citroën C3 outperforms the petrol-powered Dacia Sandero in overall sustainability, highlighting the benefits of electrified powertrains even in the small car segment. The C3 achieved a three-and-a-half-star rating with a score of 62%, compared to the Sandero’s three-star rating at 59%. 🚗

Thanks to its 48-volt mild-hybrid system and low vehicle weight, the C3 delivers improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact, with fuel consumption as low as 4.7 L/100 km in warm weather. Lower weight also helps reduce production impact and lessen tyre abrasion. 🌱

By contrast, the Sandero’s results show that smaller size alone does not guarantee better sustainability. While lightweight, its higher fuel consumption and weaker pollutant control during cold starts limit its overall performance. Green NCAP’s latest results reveal an interesting outcome in the large SUV segment. The hybrid Dacia Bigster and the fully electric Cadillac Optiq achieve very similar overall environmental impact, despite using different powertrains. Both cars earned a 3-1/2-star Sustainability Rating, with scores of 63% and 67%, respectively. ⚖️🚗

While the Optiq benefits from zero tailpipe emissions, its large 80 kWh battery and weight of nearly 2.4 tonnes affect efficiency, particularly in cold weather and on longer journeys. Its charging performance is also slower than comparable electric SUVs, meaning drivers may need to wait up to 40 minutes to recharge from 10% to 80%. 🔋❄️

In contrast, the Bigster’s hybrid system makes efficient use of electric assistance, delivering fuel consumption as low as 4.8 L/100 km in urban driving. While the Dacia Spring excels in overall sustainability, its limited range and modest charging capacity make it most suitable for short, urban journeys. The Hyundai Inster and VW ID.4 offer greater usability for longer trips, with improved charging times and cabin heating systems. The SEAT Ibiza provides a reliable reference point for traditional combustion engines, showing consistent performance but a higher carbon footprint over its life cycle. ♻️⚡⛽
