The Mercedes-Benz CLA EQ 250+ and its latest Green NCAP test results challenge that assumption. Despite weighing nearly two tonnes and carrying a substantial 90 kWh battery, the Mercedes-Benz CLA EQ 250+ has achieved a five-star Green NCAP Sustainability Rating and an overall score of 91%. ⚡🚗

The CLA EQ over-delivers on driving range as well, reaching up to 690 km on rural roads in mild weather conditions and even in winter motorway driving at -7°C, the car's estimated range remains high at 456 km. Meanwhile, the car's ultra-fast charging can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 22.6 minutes, helping address one of the greatest concerns among prospective EV buyers: range anxiety. 🔋❄️

🌍 Green NCAP tests reveal the real-world trade-offs of electric and combustion cars 🌍

As the colder months settle in and holiday travel begins, drivers are faced with crucial decisions on their journey. Green NCAP's latest real-world tests of the electric BYD Sealion 7 and CUPRA Born, alongside the petrol-powered BMW 5 Series and X2, offer timely insights into how each vehicle responds to winter conditions. ❄️

The CUPRA Born achieved the highest rating with 4.5 stars and an 86% Sustainability Score, while the larger BYD Sealion 7 followed with a solid 4-star rating (73%). In contrast, the petrol BMW 5 Series and X2 received 2.5 stars each, with Sustainability Scores of 46% and 49% respectively, highlighting the carbon cost of fossil fuel use despite their predictable performance and advanced clean-air technologies. ⚙️🍃

Electric vehicles may offer lower emissions and stronger sustainability scores, but they are not immune to the effects of cold weather, with reduced range, slower charging, and variable heating efficiency. Meanwhile, petrol cars maintain predictable performance, but their environmental impact remains significantly higher. ⛽🔋

“Green NCAP’s tests deliver essential, real-world insights for consumers navigating the often-confusing choice between a large EV and a premium petrol car. With the Sealion 7 and CUPRA Born, BYD and CUPRA offer highly appealing options that combine strong performance with lower environmental impact — a win for many buyers. However, as with all electric vehicles, drivers should be mindful of the significant range reductions that can occur in cold winter conditions. Conversely, the BMWs provide predictable range and the convenience of easy refuelling, but they remain bound by the inherent carbon footprint of burning fossil fuels. Green NCAP’s latest testing round addresses common driver concerns around electric vehicles, from reduced range in cold weather to charging performance and cabin comfort. The results highlight how the Dacia Spring, Hyundai Inster, and Volkswagen ID.4 – as well as the petrol-powered SEAT Ibiza – perform under realistic, winter driving conditions. ❄️🛣️

While the Dacia Spring excels in overall sustainability, its limited range and modest charging capacity make it most suitable for short, urban journeys. The Hyundai Inster and VW ID.4 offer greater usability for longer trips, with improved charging times and cabin heating systems. The SEAT Ibiza provides a reliable reference point for traditional combustion engines, showing consistent performance but a higher carbon footprint over its life cycle. ♻️⚡⛽
