Christina and Rodney shared 25 years of marriage. A life together. A family. Memories, laughter, hard seasons, ordinary days, and a love that lasted through all of it.
Rodney was a Marine and a retired Guardsman. He was a husband. A father. And a man deeply loved by his family.
When Christina lost Rodney to suicide, she was left not only grieving her husband, but navigating a kind of loss that can be incredibly difficult for others to understand.
When Christina shared these words with us, they meant more than we can say:
“Since finding Green Star Families, I have felt more seen, heard, and understood than at any other point over the past year.”
This is why Green Star Families of America exists.
For Christina. For Rodney. And for every family who has lost a Veteran to suicide:

A Veteran can serve honorably for years.
Deploy. Sacrifice. Miss birthdays. Carry things home that most of us will never understand.
And then lose their life to suicide years after the uniform comes off.
None of what came before disappears.
And the family left behind still matters. That is the heart of Green Star Families of America.
We aren't asking anyone to change the story of military service. We're asking America not to stop telling it because of how a Veteran died.

Research shows that families grieving a suicide loss can experience stigma through blame, judgment, avoidance and even silence.
Think about what that means for a grieving family.
After losing someone they love, some families find themselves facing questions they never expected to answer.
We can do better. Say their Veteran's name. Listen to their stories.
Don't make a family defend the person they loved or explain their grief. And don't let the manner of a Veteran's death become the only thing remembered about their life.
