So very sad to hear of the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. From the instant I saw her as “Miss Jean Brodie” I was obsessed. I’m so grateful I got to meet her- we had a night on the turps comparing the rather caustic parenting methods of Scottish mothers. Dame Maggie was slyly hilarious, slightly prickly, terribly soft and deeply generous. I adored her. Her acting could turn on an emotional dime: from hilarious haughtiness to poignant self-delusion, from angry to steely to impassioned to dignified to high-handed and finally hurt and humiliated. It was like watching a Romanian gymnast execute a perfect routine.
