Despite reporters repeatedly asking which native species would actually be vaccinated, not one species was named at the press conference.

That's worth paying attention to, because Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Beth Cookson also acknowledged that there is quite limited efficacy data globally for the use of vaccines in wildlife.

She said Australia is at the forefront of developing the safety and efficacy information required to take this step.

We are at the forefront. The wildlife efficacy evidence is limited. Yet the actual native species being prioritised weren't named.

The vaccine itself is an H5N2 inactivated vaccine commercially available for poultry, not a vaccine specifically developed for Australia's native wildlife. Cookson explained that the trials have been gathering safety information across different bird species precisely because birds vary enormously in size and the vaccines were made for poultry.

She also made clear that influenza vaccines are not 100% protective, that vaccination isn't a standalone solution, and that vaccines are not necessarily risk-free.

And the native birds selected for vaccination will require two doses.
Now, yes....our meme is satire. The birds flying around looking like feathered pincushions are obviously taking the piss.

But the underlying questions are completely SERIOUS.

BEFORE Australia starts vaccinating vulnerable native species while simultaneously describing itself as being at the forefront of an area where global wildlife efficacy data remains limited, let's see the evidence.

Name the species. Publish the trial safety and efficacy data. Show the results for the species tested. Explain how adverse effects will be monitored. And show the risk-benefit assessment supporting vaccination of each priority population.

If the evidence is strong, put it on the table.

Australians have heard enough about simply trusting the process.
