@huntervhoffman Detroit is one if the few US cities to build all the freeways that were planned in the 60s. They sliced the city into pieces, destroyed many dense walkable neighborhoods, and increased the severity of the white flight that happened there.

@criticalurban@clearSNR The contemporary re-entry into cities began in the 90s. Time isnt the issue; itβs euclidean zoning practices that still serve boomer sensibilities. They have restricted density in downtowns and have built sprawling greenfield suburbs instead.
@criticalurban@clearSNR That ignores the fact that we are in a housing shortage because of underzoning in the suburbs in Queens, Staten Island, New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester, and Connecticut. Demand for walkable places outpaces supply of walkable places!
@Chicago_Goofies Looks like they need better parking enforcement. The only thing that got in the emergency vehicleβs way was an illegally stopped car.
@amimevalepitito@bfurnas Typically its a street designed for slow speeds and local vehicle traffic. May include traffic diverters and speed bumps. Typically doesnβt include bike lanes because the street is designed to be shared safely.
@miraefox@Estarkmiller They are going to repave the whole street. Thats why they are doing a redesign nowβ¦because they are already going to redo the street so the cost of making it safer is negligible. The alternative is to repave it the same way then spend more money fixing the safety issues later.
@The_Suburbanist Your wording is also ambiguous. βAnywhere in the CBDβ could be interpreted as either (1) βall locationsβ or (2) βany one locationβ.
@The_Suburbanist Your point about βanywhere in the CBDβ is disingenuous. The CBD itself is about 30 minutes across is any direction to begin with. Also, no one needs to build their commute around βanywhere in the CBDβ; they build it on workplace.
@JamesSurowiecki there are three concepts that almost every conservative is incapable of comprehending
1: marginal tax rates
2: population density
3: externalities
@pjlavish@MarkScottPR@hernandezforny@KathyHochul@ZohranKMamdani Both good points, but the data here is good enough to demonstrate my point IMO. If anyone is being undercounted, it isn't the wealthy or well-resourced. And FWIW, the Census is still the most complete demography we have. This one is from reddit but uses more recent ACS data.
